  • Patent number: 8061974
Abstract: A compressor having a variable-geometry ported shroud includes a compressor housing defining an inlet duct, a shroud, and a bypass passage. A variable-geometry port extends through the shroud into the bypass passage, and includes an adjustable mechanism that is selectively configurable to adjust the meridional location of the port between at least first and second meridional locations. In one embodiment an opening extends through the shroud, and the adjustable mechanism includes a bypass control device that is disposed within the opening and is axially movable therein. The bypass control device has an axial length less than that of the opening such that there is always a portion of the opening that remains unblocked by the bypass control device and forms a port through the shroud. The bypass control device is axially movable between at least first and second positions to place the port at the first and second meridional locations.

  • Publication number: 20060067829
Abstract: The present invention provides a high efficiency compressor wheel with highly backswept blades, such that the wheel provides optimal efficiency over a wide operating range. The compressor wheel is made of titanium, which provides for an acceptably thin blade thickness while providing a backsweep of more than 50° and improves the aerodynamic flow characteristics within the compressor wheel's flow channels. By providing stable operation at both lower and higher flows allows a compressor to provide stable flow over a wider range of engine operating conditions, thereby accommodating higher engine speeds, torques and boost levels. The internal flow characteristics provided for by the present invention also reduces efficiency losses associated with flow separation and recirculation, which results in improved compressor efficiency.

  • Patent number: 6932563
Abstract: A buffer chamber and outlet guide provide an air path from an intake passage in a compressor housing to an upstream position relative to an intake port of the compressor. Surging is minimized during low airflow conditions while cyclic forces on the blades of the impeller are minimized during high airflow conditions. By providing an air path through the buffer chamber and outlet guide, ribs or other supporting structures are eliminated within the air pathway through the intake port and intake passage within the compressor housing.
