More particularly the present invention relates to assays for detecting exocytosis and/or endocytosis wherein membrane fusion is detected by an increase in fluorescence of a lipophilic fluorescent dye due to fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) occurring from one lipophilic fluorescent dye to another lipophilic fluorescent dye.
