Patent number: 11075751Abstract: A modular valuable media recycling device is presented. The valuable media recycling device includes a media infeed module, a validator module, an escrow module, a plurality of media feeder/stacking modules, and a plurality of cassette modules. When a module handles a valuable media item along a media transport path, the module's identifier and security information are passed as a message to a next module that is to handle the media item in a processing path for the media item. Each module independently validates the authenticity of the message received from a previous module. The number of media feeder/stacking modules and cassette modules are scalable based on the transaction terminal that the modular valuable media recycling device is integrated into.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 2018Date of Patent: July 27, 2021Assignee: NCR CorporationInventors: Alexander William Whytock, Scott Low Colston, Ross Johnston, Craig Scott Nicol, Anthony James Storey

Patent number: 8783559Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed for determining an empty condition in an item of media container. The apparatus includes a plate member, comprising a reflective region, that moves towards an empty position as items of media are dispensed from a container, and a mask element which is locatable in a first position as items of media are dispensed, and a further position when the container is empty. An empty condition of the container is determined responsive to the mask element being located in the further position.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2012Date of Patent: July 22, 2014Assignee: NCR CorporationInventors: Stewart D. Lees, Ross Johnston

Patent number: 6215755Abstract: A read/write arm for use in an optical memory system. The read/write arm of the present invention has reflective surfaces for directing an optical beam from the arm rotation axis on to an optical disk. The arm features a lightweight lens mounted at one end of the arm for focusing a light beam onto an optical disk. The focal distance of the light beam may be adjusted using piezoelectric actuators mounted on the read/write arm for precisely deflecting the arm. The light beam may be further adjusted through use of a relay lens interposed between a collimating lens and the object lens. This arrangement is advantageously optimized through the use of feedback loops.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1998Date of Patent: April 10, 2001Assignee: Blue Sky ResearchInventors: James J.
