Abstract: The invention relates to chromogenic lactams, to their preparation and to the use thereof in pressure-sensitive or heat-sensitive recording materials.The novel lactams have the general formula I ##STR1## wherein the ring A is an aromatic or heteroaromatic radical containing 6 ring atoms;the ring B is an unsubstituted or substituted benzene nucleus; andZ is ##STR2## R, R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 are as defined in the description.

Abstract: Pyran-containing phthalides of the formula ##STR1## in which R is hydrogen, alkyl which has not more than 12 carbon atoms and is unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, cyano, hydroxyl or lower alkoxy, or is cycloalkyl, phenalkyl or phenyl each of which is unsubstituted or substituted, or an unsubstituted or substituted heterocyclic radical, R' is hydrogen, or R together with R' is C.sub.2 -C.sub.3 alkylene which is unsubstituted or substituted by methyl,X is hydrogen, alkyl having 1 to 12 carbon atoms or a monocyclic or polycyclic aromatic or heteroaromatic radical and the ring A is a benzene or naphthalene ring which is unsubstituted or monosubstituted or polysubstituted by halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or lower alkoxycarbonyl, and the ring B is an aromatic or heteroaromatic radical which has 6 ring atoms and which can contain an aromatic fused ring, it being possible for both the ring B and the fused ring to be substituted.

Abstract: Pyrroline- or indoline-containing phthalides of formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently of the other lower alkyl, C.sub.5 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl or benzyl or, when taken together, are C.sub.4 -C.sub.6 alkylene,Y is alkyl or not more than 12 carbon atoms, unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, cyano, hydroxy or lower alkoxy, or is benzyl,X is hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms or an aryl radical, and the ring A is a benzene or naphthalene ring which is unsubstituted or substituted by one or more members selected from the group consisting of halogen, cyano, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or lower alkoxycarbonyl, and the ring B is an aromatic or heteroaromatic radical which contains 6 ring atoms and which may contain an aromatic fused ring, which ring B as well as the fused ring may be substituted.These phthalides are particularly suitable for use as color formers in pressure- or heat-sensitive recording materials and give lightfast yellow, orange or red images.

Abstract: A pressure-sensitive or heat-sensitive recording material in which the color reactant system contains, as main components(A) a polycyclic compound of the formula ##STR1## in which X is a monocyclic or polycyclic aromatic or heteroaromatic radical,Y is a substituent detachable as an anion,Q.sub.1 is --O--, --S--, >N--R or >N--NH--R,Q.sub.2 is --CH.sub.2 --, --CO--, --CS-- or --SO.sub.2 -- andR is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl, C.sub.5 -C.sub.10 cycloalkyl, aryl such as phenyl or aralkyl such as benzyl, and ring A is an aromatic or heterocyclic radical having 6 ring atoms, which can have an aromatic fused ring, it being possible for both ring A and the fused ring to be substituted,(B) an organic condensation component capable of forming a chromogenic compound with component (A) and(C) an electron-withdrawing and a color-developing component.
