  • Publication number: 20070218274
Abstract: Provided is a film-forming composition substantially free of organic solvent which includes an aqueous dispersion of polymeric microparticles prepared by emulsion polymerization of a monomeric composition containing (1) at least 10 percent by weight of one or more vinyl aromatic compounds; (2) 0.1 to 10 percent by weight of one or more carboxylic acid functional polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated monomers; (3) 0 to 10 percent by weight of one or more polymerizable monomers having one or more functional groups capable of reacting to form crosslinks; and (4) one or more polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomers. Each of (1), (2), (3) and (4) are different one from the other and at least one of (3) and (4) is present in the monomeric composition. Multi-layer composite coatings and coated substrates also are provided.

  • Publication number: 20060258808
Abstract: Disclosed are single component storage stable, waterborne coating compositions. The coating compositions comprise a film-forming resin composition comprising a first film-forming resin comprising an acrylic polyol, a second film-forming resin, and a curing agent. Also disclosed are substrates at least partially coated with a coating deposited from such compositions, multi-component composite coatings wherein at least one coating layer is deposited from such compositions, and methods for improving the mar and/or chemical resistance of a coating deposited from a single component storage stable waterborne coating composition.

  • Publication number: 20050249958
Abstract: Film-forming compositions are disclosed that are substantially free of organic solvent. The film-forming compositions include a resinous binder and at least one water dilutable additive including the reaction product of (i) a reactant including at least one isocyanate functional group with (ii) an active hydrogen containing alkoxypolyalkylene compound. Also disclosed are multi-layer composite coatings that include such film-forming compositions and methods of applying such multi-component composite coatings to a substrate.

  • Publication number: 20050031885
Abstract: A curable, aqueous film-forming composition is provided, comprising: (a) a copolymer containing reactive functional groups and comprising at least 30 mol % of residues having alternating structural units: -[DM-AM]- wherein DM represents a residue from a donor monomer, and AM represents a residue from an acceptor monomer, at least 15 mol % of the copolymer comprising a donor monomer having the structure (I): wherein R1 is linear or branched C1 to C4 alkyl, R2 is selected from methyl, linear, cyclic or branched C1 to C20 alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkaryl and aralkyl; and (b) a curing agent having functional groups reactive with the reactive functional groups of (a). The invention is also directed to a multi-component composite coating composition including a base coat deposited from a pigmented film-forming composition and a transparent topcoat applied over the base coat.
