    Abstract: A step-up transformer is connected to a reference potential level and is coupled to a multiple-electrode gas-filled discharge tube to provide a pulse of sufficient magnitude to fire the tube and thereby protect a signal line and the equipment to which it is connected against voltage surges which may be harmful but which are otherwise too low to ignite the tube.
