The system utilizes an identification system module (116) embedded in a digital storage media (114) to grant authorization to media players (118). Prior to reading the digital data recorded on the media (114), an identification system interrogator (122) reads authorization data from the identification system module (116) to determine whether the media player (118) is authorized to read the media (114). If the authorization data matches the media player's unique identifier, authorization is granted and the media player (118) commences to read the media (114).

    Abstract: A method of communicating from a transmitter to a receiver over a communication medium. For the transmitter, the method includes the step of formatting data into a data stream to be communicated across the communications medium. This data stream comprises a plurality of headers (PACK HEADER). Moreover, for each of the plurality of headers, the method performs two steps. First, the method modifies information encoded by the header by performing a bitwise logical operation between selected bits of the header (B) with a predetermined bit pattern (A). Second, the method transmits the plurality of headers on to the communications medium. For the receiver, the method includes the step of receiving the plurality of headers from the communications medium. Additionally, for each of the received headers, the receiver recovers the information encoded by the header.

    Abstract: The invention consists of attaching or embedding a “TIRIS” transponder (or other RF or IR or barcode or other identifying device) physically into the center of the proposed DVD disk. Once a disk is input to a media player, the interrogation portion of the media player transmits an interrogation signal to the transponder located on the disk. Once empowered with the interrogation signal, the transponder accesses the predetermined address, code word, encryption algorithms, media type information, and copyright information from it's memory. Then the transponder transmits the address, the code word, encryption algorithms, media type information and copyright information to the interrogator, located within the media player, and the interrogator sends the transponder data stream to a conditional access management processor(CAMP).

    Abstract: The invention consists of attaching or embedding a "TIRIS" transponder (or other RF or IR or barcode or other identifying device) physically into the center of the proposed DVD disk. Within the memory of the transponder, both a predetermined address and a code word are preprogrammed into the transponder at the manufacturing level of the media product. The media player not only comprises functionality to play the disk, but also comprises the functionality to transmit an interrogation signal to the transponder, and then to receive the transponder response signal. Therefore, once a disk is input to a media player, the interrogation portion of the media player transmits an interrogation signal to the transponder located on the disk. Thus once empowered with the interrogation signal, the transponder accesses the predetermined address and the code word from it's memory.
