  • Patent number: 6147715
Abstract: A television system has a television viewing mode (50) and a guide mode (56, 58). The guide mode includes an electronic program guide (EPG), which provides the viewer program information for tuned programs, and a tape index guide (TIG), which provides information for programs recorded on a video cassette (16). In both guides, real time images of a program are displayed in a PIP window (50) on the television screen and guide information (56, 58) is displayed in the background. In both guides, the viewer may switch between a currently telecast program or a recorded program. The viewer may access either guide from the television mode and vice versa. In the guide mode, the viewer may independently switch the guide information and the type of program, i.e., tuned or recorded, in the PIP window.

  • Patent number: 6125231
Abstract: A method for recording on video tape and indexing programs carried by a television signal. The title of some, but not all, of the programs is embedded real time in the television signal. A video tape cassette is loaded in a VCR for recording. A data file corresponding to a plurality of television program listings is stored in memory. The data file includes the channel and start time of each program listing, and the title if available. The program listings are displayed on a video monitor. One of the displayed program listings is selected for recording. The data corresponding to the program listing selected for recording is transferred from the data file to a VCR recording stack so the VCR records the program represented by the program listing selected for recording. A directory of programs recorded on the video tape, including program titles and tape locations, is created.

  • Patent number: 6122011
Abstract: A channel map is created and/or edited with the aid of a PIP window in which a real time television program is displayed. The PIP window is displayed on a monitor screen at the same time as a channel map of pairs of network names and local channel numbers. The local channel numbers can be individually changed to create the channel map or edit the pairings of network name and local channel number. When the local channel numbers are changed, the tuner for the PIP window also automatically changes so the television program displayed in the PIP window corresponds to the television program telecast on the local channel number displayed on the screen. This provides verification of the accuracy of the pairing of network names and local channel numbers in the channel map.

  • Patent number: 6115057
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for allowing rating level control of the viewing of a program. The apparatus includes a device for entering a desired rating level for controlling the viewing of a program, a device for extracting rating data from a program video segment, the rating data indicating a rating level of the program video segment, and a device for extracting text data representative of the content of the program video segment from the program video segment. The apparatus includes a device for determining whether the extracted rating data indicates that the program video segment has an acceptable rating level for viewing with regard to the entered desired rating level and a device for blocking the playing of the program video segment if it is determined that the extracted rating data indicates that the program video segment has an unacceptable rating level for viewing with regard to the entered desired rating level.

  • Patent number: 6086450
Abstract: Bosom-support garments such as brassieres reduce lymph flow interference by providing a pattern of alternating higher and lower skin-compression areas which are configured to follow the direction of the lymph pathways in the various sectors of the breast, side, and/or back areas of the wearer. Preferably the areas of lower skin compression do not actually touch the skin, and the width of and spacing of the pattern may be varied at different areas of the garment to accommodate the comfort of the wearer and to optimize the flow of lymph. The pattern may be defined by elongated ribs of relatively higher density material formed through weaving, compression molding, or other appropriate processes. Such ribs preferably extend generally away from the nipple area of the breast so that the pattern corresponds to lymph drainage pathways leading to the axillary or subclavicular nodes, to an intercostal space, or to a plurality or all of the above.

  • Patent number: 5995092
Abstract: A system for sending selected up-to-date information in a television signal from a sender located at a network head-end or television station to a receiver co-located with a television viewer. The television viewer subscribes to an information service by telephoning a customer service center affiliated with the sender. The customer service center informs the sender of the subscription and the sender sends data packets of information individually targeted for the television viewer in the vertical blanking interval of the television signal. The television viewer's receiver accepts the data packets identified for it and on viewer command displays information included therein on the television screen. The data packets may include information relating to news, sports results, financial market updates, television programming guides, and the like. Information is displayed to the viewer in a menu format, allowing for ease of use in controlling presentation of various types of information.

  • Patent number: 5987213
Abstract: A system capable of automatically recording television programs broadcast on different cable television channels. The system includes a cable box, a video recorder and a cable programmer. The consumer enters sets of channel, date, time-of-day and length commands ("CDTL information") or compressed codes representative of such sets of commands into the video recorder. From each set of commands, subsets of date, time-of-day and length ("DTL information") are stored in the video recorder's memory. At the same time or shortly thereafter, a subset of channel, date and time-of-day commands ("CDT information") from the same set of commands is transmitted to the cable programmer. The cable programmer and video recorder have independent control circuits the control certain aspects of the recording process according to the subsets of commands stored in their memories.

  • Patent number: 5915026
Abstract: A system is provided for programming home electronic devices. The system includes a computer for converting information needed to program the electronic device which is communicated from the consumer to a representative at the site of the computer into data for programming the home electronic device. The computer communicates the programming data over telephone lines to a programming module at the consumer's location which receives the data communicated over the telephone lines from the computer. The programming module is then coupled to a home electronic device using a plug and socket, infrared link, AC line modulation or some other method of transferring data and the programming data communicated to the programming module from the computer is transferred to the home electronic device. The system is especially appropriate for data which must be programmed into a home electronic device as part of its initial setup.
