Patent number: 11955254Abstract: The present disclosure describes methods of manufacture and implementations of hybrid separators for data cables having conductive and non-conductive or metallic and non-metallic portions, and data cables including such hybrid separators. A hybrid separator comprising one or more conductive portions and one or more non-conductive portions may be positioned within a data cable between adjacent pairs of twisted insulated and shielded or unshielded conductors so as to provide physical and electrical separation of the conductors. The position and extent (laterally and longitudinally) of each conductive portion and each non-conductive portion may be selected for optimum performance of the data cable, including attenuation or rejection of cross talk, reduction of return loss, increase of stability, and control of impedance.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 2023Date of Patent: April 9, 2024Assignee: Belden, Inc.Inventors: Roy Kusuma, Bill Clark, Alice Albrinck

Publication number: 20230215600Abstract: The present disclosure describes manifold lay lengths for each twisted pair of conductors in a cable comprising at least one twisted pair of insulated conductors, reducing both internal and alien crosstalk. The lay length of each pair can be adjusted, either continuously or in discrete steps, between a shortest lay length and a longest lay length, such that each pair has each lay length at some longitudinal point along the cable. The lay lengths of each pair are staggered in their progression between shortest and longest lay length to avoid pairs having the same lay lengths for any significant length along the cable.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 27, 2022Publication date: July 6, 2023Inventors: Roy Kusuma, William Thomas Clark, Alex Chattin, Caspar Michael Arbeeny

Publication number: 20210350956Abstract: Methods of design, manufacture and implementations of balanced twisted pair cables with a barrier tape or shield, with tuned attenuation, impedance, and coupling properties. A filler is included within the cable to separate the pairs and provide a support base for the shield, allowing for optimized ground plane uniformity and stability for tuned attenuation, impedance, and coupling properties. The filler orientation, shape, and size provides support for the shield such that a gap is provided between the shield and the twisted pairs with a given minimum size without increasing the maximum cable core size. The length of arms of the filler may be adjusted to fine-tune the size and shape of this gap and control air-dielectric volume and radial contact or spacing between any pair(s) and the shield, tuning electrical performance characteristics caused by non-linear effects of electromagnetic interactions at short ranges between the pairs, shield, filler, or other components.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 4, 2021Publication date: November 11, 2021Inventors: Roy Kusuma, William Thomas Clark

Patent number: 10796823Abstract: A communications cable having a plurality of twisted pairs of conductors and various embodiments of a metal foil tapes between the twisted pairs and a cable jacket is disclosed. In some embodiments, a metal foil tape includes a discontinuous metal layer and a polymer layer bonded to the metal layer. Portions of the metal layer and the polymer layer are deformed to form a plurality of dimples, the dimples forming air gaps between the polymer layer and the cable core or a barrier layer if used. The air gaps lower the overall dielectric constant between the metal layer and the cable core, thereby lowering the alien capacitance of the communications cable.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 2019Date of Patent: October 6, 2020Assignee: Panduit Corp.Inventors: Royal O. Jenner, Masud Bolouri-Saransar, Ronald A. Nordin, Paul W. Wachtel, Stephen Thwaites, Roy Kusuma, James Malkemus, Scott Brown

Publication number: 20170320285Abstract: In one embodiment a matrix tape includes a support layer, a metallic layer composed of metallic segments attached to the support layer and a barrier layer attached to the support layer opposite the metallic layer. In another embodiment a matrix tape includes a support layer, a metallic layer composed of metallic segments attached to the support layer and a strength member attached to the metallic layer opposite the support layer. In a third embodiment a method of manufacturing a matrix tape includes providing a payout and an uptake reel. Dispensing a tape with a support layer and a metallic layer from the payout reel, ablating the metallic reel with a laser, attached at least one of a strength member or a barrier layer to the tape, and spooling the tape on the uptake reel.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 9, 2017Publication date: November 9, 2017Applicants: Panduit Corp., General Cable Technologies CorporationInventors: Royal O.
