  • Patent number: 6688489
Abstract: A portable fastener delivery system is provided that comprises an automated unloading mechanism that removes fasteners from a fastener storage device and delivers the fasteners through a delivery conduit to a work station. Generally, the portable fastener delivery system is mobile throughout a production facility so that fasteners may be delivered to a plurality of work stations. In operation, a signal is transmitted to a control system requesting a specific fastener configuration, and the control system causes positioning of the unloading mechanism adjacent the fastener storage device. A pneumatic source is then activated to cause the unloading mechanism to remove a fastener from the fastener storage device using a vacuum generator, and once the fastener is removed, the fastener is transported through a delivery conduit to the work station using pressurized air from the pneumatic source through a flexible fastener delivery tube.

  • Patent number: 6112792
Abstract: A composite fiber placement mid-span redirect device (10) mounted on a fiber placement assembly (12) guides a plurality of composite material tows (14) along a fiber path from a material supply creel (20) to a fiber placement head (30) during a composite forming process. The mid-span redirect device (10) includes a frame assembly (38) to which a plurality of outer swivel roller assemblies (80) and a plurality of inner swivel roller assemblies (90) are attached. Each outer swivel roller assembly (80) contains an outer roller (82), an outer capture roller (84), an outer swivel bracket assembly (86), and a counterbalancing member (88). Each inner swivel assembly (90) contains an inner roller (92), an inner swivel bracket assembly (96), and a counterbalancing member (98).

  • Patent number: 5979531
Abstract: A fiber placement head movable with respect to a surface, for placing fiber tows thereon, including a feed assembly for feeding the tows to a front end of the feed assembly where the feed assembly includes first and second sets of feed tow guides, an applicator assembly at the front end to receive the tows and apply such to the surface where the applicator assembly includes first and second sets of applicator tow guides, and a device for rotating the applicator assembly relative to the feed assembly between first and second positions. In the first position, the first set of applicator guides is aligned with the first set of feed guides, and in the second position, the first set of applicator guides is aligned with the second set of feed guides.
