  • Patent number: 6267446
Abstract: A compressed upholstered furniture assembly kit, method of manufacture and assembled article of furniture. A consumer-assembled article of furniture having upholstered portions is provided in a manner which comports with the shipping, warehousing and display constraints of retailers and which accommodates a variety of consumer decorating tastes. The kit includes frame members and reduced volume padding. This padding, when exposed to air at atmospheric pressure expands to its natural size and shape. The padding may include a porous protective cover which is applied prior to reducing its volume, and may also include a bladder to which fluid is added to provide further expansion. The expanded padding provides cushions which are covered with separately available decorative, fitted covers to form upholstered pieces, which are then applied to the assembled frame to form a completed article of furniture.

  • Patent number: 5738414
Abstract: A modular furniture assembly comprising interconnected frame, back, and arms. The frame has walls mounting the back and arms. The frame walls include flanges and the back and arms include slits, with each flange being slidably received in a corresponding slit to secure the back and arms to the walls. Another aspect involves the covering which is disposed over components of the modular furniture. A component body has an exterior surface over which a covering extends. The body includes a channel and the covering includes a strip having a size and shape approximately matching the internal contour of the channel. The strip easily slides into the channel to secure the covering over the outer contour, while the channel configuration prevents the movement of the strip except in the sliding direction.

  • Patent number: 5069506
Abstract: A knock-down furniture assembly comprises a joint construction between furniture components wherein a rod has a slip fit engagement with a bushing. The rod is affixed to one component and the bushing to another. In one embodiment, the rod has a head which fits within a hole in a first wood component and is captured by means of cured epoxy resin introduced into the hole around an immediately adjacent portion of the rod's shank. The remainder of the rod projects from the first wood component and when the first wood component is moved into assembly with a second wood component, the rod slip fits within the bushing on the second wood component.

  • Patent number: 4893958
Abstract: A joint for a knock-down furniture assembly including a rod which has a slip fitting engagement with a bushing. The rod is affixed to one component of the furniture and the bushing to another component. In one embodiment, the rod has a head which fits within a hole in a first wood component and is captured by means of cured epoxy resin introduced into the hole or on an immediate adjacent portion of the rod shank. Set screws are threaded into tapped holes in the side wall of the bushing and are accessible through aligned holes in the second wood component for actuation by polygonally shaped wrench engaging similarly shaped sockets in the ends of the set screws for tightening against the inserted rod shank thereby to lock the two components in assembly and for loosening to unlock them. In another embodiment, the rod is an octagonal rod which slip fits into a square tube. The octagonal rod includes a transverse threaded bore into which a set screw is inserted.

  • Patent number: 4850646
Abstract: A furniture frame includes a plurality of frame members having rectangular tubular cross-sectional configurations. One of the frame members has a pair of elongated generally wedge-shaped parts rigidly attached thereto in spaced apart relation to one another thereon and projecting therefrom in generally parallel relation. A pair of other of the frame members have a cross brace frame member extending between and at its opposite ends rigidly attached to the other frame members so as to dispose the other frame members in generally parallel relation to one another. Each of the other frame members at same one of their opposite ends is open with generally wedge-shaped pockets defined therein by indented portions of the frame members located near the open ends thereof.
