    Abstract: An orientation and stabilization device for a submunition is disclosed. A w profile cylindrical submunition body has a single fin attached thereto at an asymmetrically located position with respect to the central axis of the cylindrical body. The fin is tip weighted in such a way that, when the submunition falls through the air, a constant spin and vertical velocity is established, with the major axis of the cylindrical body disposed at an angle to the descent path.

    Abstract: A ball or projectile for small caliber ammunition is disclosed. The projele is useful in training ammunition for the training of personnel on firing ranges having a limited area and a maximum range which is below the range of the standard service round for the weapon on which the training is conducted. The projectile has a body including an ogival forward section, a cylindrical center section, and a conical trailing section. A plurality of fins is mounted longitudinally on the conical trailing section for generating spin dampening torque to cause gyroscopic instability and thereby create high aerodynamic drag upon said projectile when fired from a weapon.

    Abstract: A tracer training bullet which can be assembled into a conventional cartre case and fired in a conventional M2 machine gun is disclosed. The bullet consists of a main body of relatively low strength material which is segmented so that, if not restrained, it will bend under the centrifugal rotational force imparted to the segments by the spinning action of the projectile when fired. The bending of the projectile segments away from their central axis is ordinarily prevented by a retainer in the form of a spider. The spider is made of a relatively low temperature melting material, preferably aluminum, having a given thermal mass. The burn of the tracer material during the flight of the bullet toward a target weakens the retainer to the point of rupture after the bullet has travelled a given distance toward a target position. After the target position is passed, the securement member is destroyed by the high temperature burning action and the segments of the projectile bend or flex apart.

The mine includes a warhead subassembly having walls forming a chamber for an explosive and having a frontplate which forms and ejects fragments upon an explosion, and includes a stabilization subassembly using a fin for controlling the trajectory of descent and its position of landing, after its ejection from an artillery projectile, and includes a target sensing subassembly having an antenna and signal processor and computer for tracking a low flying object, such as a plane, helicopter, drone, or missile, and for upwardly ejecting its fragments when the object enters a lethal zone of the mine.

    Abstract: Stiffeners between sabot petals resist bending of a kinetic energy projece, and thereby reduce aiming dispersion. The stiffeners compensate for material removed during the separation of an annular sabot into individual sabot petals, thereby eliminating the need for post-assembly machining to restore a circular perimeter. The stiffeners may extend radially from the surface of the kinetic energy projectile to the gun bore, for direct force carry-through, to reduce flexure and whip. In one embodiment, a thick portion on each stiffener fits into a notch in the abutting sabot petals to strengthen the sabot in a manner similar to an "I" beam.
