    Abstract: Method and apparatus for the simultaneous use of ultrasound on a probe for imaging and therapeutic purposes. The probe limits the effects of undesirable interference noise in a display by synchronizing high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) waves with an imaging transducer to cause the noise to be displayed in an area of the image that does not overlap the treatment site. In one embodiment, the HIFU is first energized at a low power level that does not cause tissue damage, so that the focal point of the HIFU can be identified by a change in the echogenicity of the tissue caused by the HIFU. Once the focal point is properly targeted on a desired treatment site, the power level is increased to a therapeutic level. The location of each treatment site is stored and displayed to the user to enable a plurality of spaced-apart treatment sites to be achieved. As the treatment progresses, any changes in the treatment site can be seen in the real time, noise-free image.

    Abstract: A vibrating toothbrush which includes a brushhead (18) mounted for vibrating movement, a reservoir (30) for containing dentifrice which is located in the handle (14) of the toothbrush, and fluid connecting means (32) connecting the reservoir (30) to the brushhead (18). The brushhead (18) includes either hollow bristles (80) or nozzles (87) in the brushhead (18) to permit egress of the dentifrice from the brushhead (18) in the area of the bristles. The brushhead (18) is driven so as to provide a scrubbing action for the teeth and to provide acoustical energy for acoustical cleansing as well. The action of the brushhead (18) and the load thereon will result in dentifrice being released out of the brushhead (18) or bristles (80) as needed, supporting cavitation and streaming for the acoustical energy, as well as providing the cleansing/therapeutic effect of the dentifrice.

    Abstract: Disclosed is an arrangement for use in transesophageal ultrasonic imaging of the heart (and other translumenal applications) in which both the position and orientation of an ultrasonic probe that generates an ultrasonic scanning pattern is determined in terms of a three-dimensional coordinate system that lies outside the patient's body and is produced by a magnetic field generator. The arrangement provides two-dimensional multi-planar scanning in which the ultrasonic scanning pattern is selectively positionable relative to rotation about two orthogonal coordinate axes that are mutually orthogonal to the longitudinal axis of the ultrasonic scanning probe. Provision is made for generating electrical signals indicative of rotational position of the scanning pattern relative to each of the two axes of rotation.

The arm (32) is mounted for oscillating action about a torsion pin (38), by means of a electromagnet (16) in the body acting in combination with two permqanent magnets (34, 35) which are mounted on the rear end (31) of the resonator arm (32). On the forward end (44) of the resonator arm (32) is mounted a set of bristles (47). The arm (32) is driven such that the tips of the bristles operate within ranges of amplitude and frequency to produce a bristle tip velocity greater than 1.5 meters per second, producing a significant cleansing effect beyond the tips of the bristles.

    Abstract: Devices are described which can be used to study the physiological function of the intestinal wall. These devices include an ultrasonic transducer that can be attached to a region of the intestinal wall. The transducer interrogates the wall and echoes are obtained from the different wall layers. The echoes are processed to produce an M-mode display of the wall. This allows monitoring how the wall changes with time. For example, as the wall contracts the muscle layer thickens and this action may be observed with the device. Other sensors and electrodes can be combined with this probe to correlate various physiological action. Finally, several such probes can be combined into a common introducible probe but which will monitor several regions along the intestinal wall. The major advantage of the disclosed device is that it provides a measurement of intestinal motility previously unattainable and it is introducible by endoscopy. This makes it a suitable tool for studying patient disease.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for demobilizing the motile subgingival bacteria and for removing soft plaque from the teeth on a substantially daily basis as a means to prevent, treat and/or limit periodontal diseases. A piezoelectric multimorph transducer is used to generate low-energy vibrations, these vibrations are applied to the teeth and gingival fluids to cause mild cavitation within the fluid to remove subgingival plaque and to demobilize motile bacteria. An electronic circuit for driving the transducer at its resonant frequency or multiples thereof and for electrically isolating the user are included.
