  • Patent number: 9339313
Abstract: A hip fracture support plate, in combination with hip screw fixation of an intertrochanteric hip fracture, provides additional support of the femoral head and neck fragment, tending to reduce hip screw cut-out or fracture, with collapse and mal-union of the head and neck.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 20, 2015
Date of Patent: May 17, 2016
    Inventor: Roy Y. Powlan
  • Patent number: 8540656
Abstract: An apparatus and method for the treatment of fractures of the distal radius having a means for applying traction to a fractured forearm using a resilient cantilever spring digit gripping device to assist in the manipulative reduction of the fracture, and a means for maintaining the reduced fracture of the distal forearm in a determinable position of flexion, ulnar deviation and pronation enabling the application of a closely fitting, well molded immobilization means such as a cast.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 26, 2012
Date of Patent: September 24, 2013
    Inventor: Roy Y. Powlan
  • Patent number: 8535322
Abstract: A hip nail is inserted across a fracture of the proximal femur and locked in place by a plurality of tangs that are forcibly deployed from within the leading end of the nail into the head of the femur by means of blows on a central driving shaft, while a recoil transferring tube and tool shaft, and the inertia of a mass releasably attached to the base of the nail absorbs the recoil, enabling the nail to remain stationary relative to the bone, thereby enabling the tangs to deploy in a generally curvilinear perpendicular direction without twisting or unwanted distortion.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 7, 2012
Date of Patent: September 17, 2013
    Inventor: Roy Y. Powlan
  • Patent number: 8470005
Abstract: The assembly supports the trailing end of a lag screw or hip nail device being used to immobilize a hip fracture, and enables the compression of the fractured bone ends together, thereafter enabling sliding of the femoral head together with the lag screw or hip nail laterally, while simultaneously limiting their rotation, thereby promoting healing of the fracture.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 31, 2012
Date of Patent: June 25, 2013
    Inventor: Roy Y. Powlan
  • Patent number: 8337495
Abstract: The nail is inserted into the interior of a long tubular bone. It has a plurality of elongate segments joined to the leading end of its tubular sheath. When the segments are urged through a segment guiding device that is positioned at the leading end of the sheath, the segments with their sharpened bone penetrating distal ends exit in a radial distal direction causing them to lock into the surrounding bone. During the distal translation of the sheath and the elongate segments, the segment guiding means is maintained in a fixed position relative to the surrounding bone by the centrally placed shaft of a setting tool.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 16, 2011
Date of Patent: December 25, 2012
    Inventor: Roy Y. Powlan
  • Patent number: 8308733
Abstract: The device with an adjustable bi-rotatable base assembly, aligns the central longitudinal axis of a drilling device with the axis of an x-ray beam that is coaxial with the axis of a line that extends through the distal openings of an intramedullary nail that has been inserted into the cavity of a tubular bone.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 6, 2011
Date of Patent: November 13, 2012
    Inventor: Roy Y. Powlan
  • Patent number: 8262709
Abstract: A device and method for the stabilization of the shafts of threaded hip pins in the treatment of intracapsular fractures of the neck of the femur, using an intertrochanteric hip pin stabilizing rod, a cortical side plate with a releasably attached drill and insertion tool jig, said jig comprising a means for accurately inserting said rod and a plurality of parallel threaded hip pins through openings in the jig, the cortical side plate, and the intertrochanteric pin stabilizing rod, across the fracture and into the head of the femur.

Date of Patent: September 11, 2012
    Inventor: Roy Y. Powlan
  • Patent number: 4888024
Abstract: A prosthesis, adapted for fixation within the medullary cavity of a human bone, having an orthopedic device to which a nonresorbable, flexible membrane is attached in a liquid and air-tight manner. A flexible woven sheath encompasses the membrane and the prosthesis is provided with means for introducing liquid cement under pressure internally of the membrane to force the membrane and sheath outwardly into firm engagement with the walls of the bony cavity to fix the prosthesis in the cavity once the cement has hardened. The membrane prevents any chemical interaction between the cement and bodily fluids.

  • Patent number: 4823782
Abstract: A sling for supporting the limb of a patient is formed of a panel of fabric that is foreshortened along a given axis and is supported by suspending it by means engaging the panel at its four corners.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 31, 1984
Date of Patent: April 25, 1989
    Inventor: Roy Y. Powlan
  • Patent number: 4802468
Abstract: The invention relates to total hip joint replacements in humans in which the ball-like head of the femur and the cup-shaped cavity of the acetabulum are replaced by metal, plastic or ceramic substitutes and, more particularly, to a device for cutting screw threads in the wall of the acetabulum to receive a threaded substitute hip socket.
