  • Patent number: 4593451
Abstract: Apparatus for cleaning each threaded marginal end portion of large pipe. The apparatus has a cleaning head assembly which includes a rotatable member having circumferentially spaced cleaning brushes adjustably mounted thereon so that the cleaning brushes can engage and clean the opposed pipe surface at the opposed marginal terminal ends of a joint of pipe. Spaced plate-like members are axially arranged along a common shaft, and the opposed faces of the plate members have the cleaning brushes adjustably mounted thereto and arranged so that the common shaft can be rotated in a horizontal plane, thereby bringing the brushes of one of the plate members into cleaning engagement respective to the pipe threads, and thereafter the assembly is rotated 180.degree.0 in a horizontal plane, thereby bringing the other set of brushes into cleaning relationship respective to the opposed pipe end.

  • Patent number: 4530127
Abstract: A tool having opposed cleaning heads for sequentially engaging and cleaning the opposed threaded ends of pipe joints. A pipe end is engaged and cleaned by a brush located on one of the cleaning heads. The pipe is moved longitudinally to position the remaining threaded end near the other cleaning head. The tool is manipulated to position the other cleaning head in contact with the remaining threaded end so that both the box and pin end of a pipe joint can be rapidly and efficiently cleaned.

  • Patent number: 4468959
Abstract: Tubular goods, such as drill pipe and production tubing, are measured while going into and coming out of a borehole. An electronic beam is directed from a transmitter and is detected by a distance measuring receiver. The beam commences at a known station relative to one end of a pipe suspended in the derrick; and is received at a second station which is indexed respective to the traveling block of the drilling rig. Another beam measures the position of the other end of the pipe respective to the traveling block. These measurements enable the length of each stand of pipe to be accurately ascertained while the pipe is held suspended within the derrick at a location above the derrick floor. Electronic circuitry, including a digital instrument, automatically computes the length, displays the length in feet and tenths on a digital readout, records the length on a print-out tape, and incorporates an accumulative memory register.

  • Patent number: 4356636
Abstract: A thread gauge for determining the proper length, taper, and diameter of a threaded member located on the marginal box and pin end portions of joints of casing or tubing. The threaded member of a joint usually has a thread length which can be defined by the distance the threads extend respective to a vanish point located near the end of the joint. The pin gauge of this disclosure is a conical body which has a smooth internal surface formed between a large and small diameter shoulder. The smooth surface defines a frustum of a cone. The box gauge is a second component of this invention, and has an external tapered surface formed between spaced shoulders which defines a frustum of another cone. Visual observable measuring means on the gauges determine that each of the opposed threaded surface of the joint is of proper length and nominal diameter, and is properly positioned respective to the vanish point of the threads.

  • Patent number: 4262410
Abstract: Apparatus for removing protective members from the threaded ends of pipe joints. A rotating head assembly is attached for longitudinal movement respective to a main frame having a motor mounted therewithin. The head includes a plurality of protector gripping jaws which are radially spaced from one another and aligned such that movement of the head assembly towards and away from the main frame causes the jaws to releasably grip the pipe protector. The rotating head assembly includes spaced parallel arms connected to cause the jaws to maintain the same relative position as the jaws are moved apart from one another to accommodate different diameter pipe. The apparatus can also be used to engage and remove pipe couplings as well as other threaded members. A second embodiment of the invention includes a cleaning head assembly mounted to the main frame which cleans the threads of both the box end and pin end of the pipe.
