  • Patent number: 6599395
Abstract: A method of producing paper webs coated on both sides includes the following steps: a) indirectly applying a liquid onto the paper web by passing the web through at least one nip formed by a roll and a counterelement, whereafter the web is dried; b) next, directly applying coating mixture at surplus only on one side of the web, whereafter the surplus coating mixture is removed again by use of a doctor element, the web being dried again thereafter; and c) lastly, directly applying coating mixture at surplus only on the other web side, whereafter the surplus coating mixture is removed by use of a doctor, whereafter the web is dried again. In the indirect application of liquid in the nip, or in the nips, either coating mixture to produce so-called MWC papers or a sizing suspension to produce so-called LWC papers is selectively applied.

  • Patent number: 6579368
Abstract: An application apparatus is for applying a liquid or pasty medium to a moving base. The moving base is a surface of a material web in a case of direct application and a surface of a transfer element for transferring the medium to the material web in a case of indirect application, the material web being one of paper and cardboard. The application apparatus has an inlet side and an outlet side with respect to a direction of movement of the moving base. The application apparatus includes a carrying beam; an essentially rigid supporting unit provided on the carrying beam; a sealing doctor device positioned at the inlet side of the application apparatus, the sealing doctor device being fixedly attached to the supporting unit; and a metering doctor device positioned at the outlet side of the application apparatus, the metering doctor device being fixedly attached to the supporting unit. The sealing doctor device and the metering doctor device define an application chamber therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6444030
Abstract: An apparatus applies a liquid or viscid coating medium onto a moving material web, especially one made of paper or cardboard. A coating mechanism first applies the coating medium onto an applicator element or an applicator roll, which subsequently transfers the coating medium at a coating location onto the material web in the form of a coating layer. Furthermore, if so desired, a doctoring device can be positioned at a doctor station, adjacent to the coating location, on the downstream side relative to the movement of the material web for the purpose of smoothing and/or metering the coating. The coating apparatus incorporates an apparatus for the generation and/or supplying of a fluid, preferably steam. This apparatus is positioned adjacent to the coating location or to the doctor station on the downstream side relative to the movement L of the material web.

  • Patent number: 6309704
Abstract: A device for direct or indirect application of a liquid or viscous coating medium onto a moving material web, specifically a paper or cardboard web, includes an applicator unit which, in the direct application method, applies the coating medium in the form of a coating layer directly onto the material web at a point of application. In the indirect application method, the coating medium is first applied onto an applicator element, for example an applicator roll, which then transfers, at the point of application, the coating medium to the material web in the form of a coating layer. In addition, a drying device for drying of the coating layer is provided downstream from the point of application, viewed in the direction of flow of the material web. In the applicator unit, a device for moistening and/or warming the material web, coating medium or the coating layer is additionally provided before the drying device, viewed in the flow direction of the material web.

  • Patent number: 6159289
Abstract: A doctoring device for an apparatus designed to apply a liquid or viscid medium onto a moving base surface includes a metering unit having a coater rod and a coater rod bed. The metering unit is attached to the support beam and is positioned so that it can be pressed against the base surface. A pressure-elastic support arrangement is disposed between the coater beam and the coater rod bed. The coater rod bed is supported pressure-elastically by the support beam via the support arrangement in at least two support directions that are perpendicular to each other. The spring rate of the support arrangement is adjustable in at least one of the support directions. A preferred support arrangement includes pressure hoses which are assigned to each of the two support directions. The pressures in these hoses can be adjusted, independently from each other, to a pre-determined level via a pressure source.
