  • Patent number: 8032293
Abstract: In a method for controlling an internal combustion engine, in particular a diesel internal combustion engine, at least one variable is formed on a cylinder-specific basis, which variable characterizes a respective profile of a combustion in an associated combustion chamber, and the control of cylinder-specific fuel injection parameters is influenced as a function of said at least one variable which characterizes the combustion profile.

  • Publication number: 20060185646
Abstract: In a method for controlling an inlet valve of an internal combustion engine having at least one cylinder with at least a first inlet valve and a second inlet valve, wherein the closing time of the first inlet valve is adjustable and the first inlet valve is so controlled that, at a first engine speed, the first inlet valve is closed before the closing of the second inlet valve and, at a second engine speed which is higher than the first engine speed, the first inlet valve is closed after the closing time of the second inlet valve.

  • Publication number: 20050235971
Abstract: In a method of heating the interior of a vehicle having an internal combustion engine with fuel injection and a coolant circuit for transferring waste heat from the internal combustion engine via a heat exchanger to the vehicle interior by increasing the amount of heat transferred to the coolant during low load engine operation by intentional reduction of the engine operating efficiency, the engine is operated with high exhaust gas recirculation rates while transferring heat from the exhaust gas to the coolant for heating the vehicle interior and heating with the relatively large amount of recirculated gas the intake air so that, during the following compression of the intake air and recirculated gas in the engine combustion chamber, the air is heated early to an ignition temperature permitting early combustion of injected fuel so that the fuel injection phase can be extended not only toward late injection but also toward early injection providing for a relative long combustion period whereby engine efficienc

  • Publication number: 20050034701
Abstract: In an internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders, some of which can be deactivated during operation of the engine, the cylinders which can be deactivated during operation are configured specifically for high load engine operation and have a lower compression ratio ? than the rest of the cylinders, which are configured specifically for low load engine operation.

  • Publication number: 20020026922
Abstract: In a method for operating a diesel engine having a cylinder, a piston which is guided in a longitudinally displaceable manner oscillating between an upper dead center position and a lower dead center position in the cylinder, and an injector having an injector valve for the injection of a fuel quantity into the cylinder, in a compression cycle delimited by the movement of the piston from the lower dead center position to the upper dead center position, combustion air is compressed. In a working cycle delimited by the movement of the piston from the upper dead center position to the lower dead center position, the injection of the fuel quantity occurs. In all operating states the injection begins after the upper dead center position, the injector valve being abruptly opened.

  • Patent number: 6044827
Abstract: In an exhaust gas recirculation arrangement for an internal combustion engine with an air intake duct for supplying air to the engine, an exhaust gas recirculation pipe extending into the air intake duct for recirculation exhaust gas to the air intake duct and a disc valve arranged in the exhaust gas recirculation pipe for closing the exhaust gas recirculation pipe, the exhaust gas recirculation pipe has a pipe section which extends in the air intake duct in a downstream direction from the disc valve and has, at its downstream end, a nozzle-like discharge opening for discharging exhaust gas into the air intake duct.

  • Patent number: 5771686
Abstract: A method and an apparatus are provided for operating a diesel engine with an exhaust feedback device located between the exhaust line and the intake air line, with an adjusting element that can be operated by an adjusting drive actuated by an auxiliary force to operate the exhaust feedback device as a function of signals from an electronic control device. An engine regulator permits rich/lean regulation of the diesel engine as a function of its operating parameters. A storage catalyst is located in the exhaust line, in which catalyst oxides of nitrogen (NO.sub.x) can be adsorbed, desorbed, and reduced. A sensor is located downstream from the storage catalyst for detecting the NO.sub.x concentration in the exhaust stream in such fashion that when an NO.sub.x storage threshold value is reached that varies in terms of its characteristics as a function of the rpm and the load, a switch is made from operation with a lambda value of larger than 1 to operation with a lambda value of less than 1.
