  • Patent number: 5134003
Abstract: In a hollow cylindrical structural member consisting of resin impregnated fibers wound in alternate layers of circumferential and helical windings disposed on top of one another and having reinforcing support ring structures formed at its axial ends by additional circumferential windings, the additional windings include inner and outer layers of windings of different strength fibers wherein the fibers of the outer layers have a modulus of elasticity which is smaller than that of the fibers of the inner fiber layers so that, particularly for use with high speed rotors, the centrifugal forces do not cause separation between outer and inner layers.

  • Patent number: 5123897
Abstract: A recipient for a gas ultracentrifuge which comprises an oblong cylindrical shell having a lid closing each end, a base flange having an upper end surrounding one end of the shell and a plastically deformable ring interposed between the base flange and the shell. In an embodiment of the invention, the plastically deformable ring comprises a ring-shaped section and a welding shoulder which forms a ring-shaped collar integral with the base flange, the thickness of the shell being greater than that of the ring-shaped collar and about the same thickness as that of the welding shoulder.

  • Patent number: 4963210
Abstract: A method of producing an elongate article comprises the step of providing, by winding a filament, a plurality of superposed layers to form a hollow cylinder having open ends. At least one of the layers is formed of a circumferential winding and at least one of the layers is formed of a cross winding. The cross winding has fibers having a negative coefficient of thermal expansion and is oriented at a predetermined inclined angle to the cylinder axis. The method further comprises the step of securing to the open ends of the hollow cylinder end pieces comprised of a material having a high surface hardness and dimensional stability. The inclined angle has such a magnitude that temperature-caused changes in the axial length of the hollow cylinder compensate for temperature-caused changes in the axial length of the end pieces.

  • Patent number: 4932136
Abstract: A tester for use in testing coordinate measuring devices includes a hub having a generally tubular body portion, an outer ring, and a plurality of spokes connected to the hub and to the outer ring, each of the spokes having a generally tubular body portion and extending radially from the hub. A plurality of holders are connected to respective ones of the plurality of spokes, and elements respectively supported by the holders are provided which are adapted for use in testing the coordinates of a measuring device. The generally tubular body portion of the hub and the generally tubular body portion of each of the spokes is composed of a bonded fiber material in which layers of circumferential windings alternate with layers of helical windings, and wherein the helical windings are wound of a fiber which has a negative coefficient of thermal expansion.
