  • Patent number: 5070131
Abstract: A gear oil composition is provided, the composition comprising a hydrogenated star conjugated diolefin polymer having arms with weight average molecular weights between about 3,000 and about 15,000. Such star polymers are effective as viscosity index improvers, and yet are sufficiently shear stable for service in gear oil lubricants.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 28, 1990
Date of Patent: December 3, 1991
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
Inventors: Robert B. Rhodes, Rudolf J. Eckert, Donald E. Loeffler
  • Patent number: 5035820
Abstract: Lubricating oil compositions which contain hydrogenated diene star polymers grafted with N-vinylimidazole exhibit improved engine performance when prepared by grafting the polymer in an oil mixture containing at least 6% by weight of the star polymer. The grafting is accomplished by contacting the polymer with from about 3.0 to about 5.5 wt % N-vinylimidazole when N-vinylimidazole is the sole reactant and from about 1.0 to about 5.0 wt % N-vinylimidazole when N-vinylimidazole is used in combination with N-vinylpyrrolidone.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 15, 1990
Date of Patent: July 30, 1991
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
Inventors: Robert B. Rhodes, Rudolf J. A. Eckert
  • Patent number: 4670550
Abstract: Biopolymer formulation, in particular a polysaccharide-containing water in oil emulsion, process for preparing such emulsions and process for concentrating these emulsions. Aqueous systems thickened by the incorporation of biopolymer emulsions.

  • Patent number: 4557849
Abstract: A process for the preparation of an oil-soluble, star-shaped product having viscosity index-improving and dispersant properties, comprising modifying a hydrogenated star-shaped polymer wherein said arms are hydrogenated homopolymers and copolymers of conjugated dienes and mono-alkenyl arenes, and wherein the hydrogenated polymer is metallated with an organolithium compound in the presence of a metallation promoter, and subsequently reacted with a vinyl pyridine or a carbonyl group containing organic compound.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 13, 1984
Date of Patent: December 10, 1985
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
    Inventor: Rudolf J. A. Eckert
  • Patent number: 4490267
Abstract: Lubricating oil additives having superior viscometric and detergent properties are prepared by polymerizing an alkyl(meth)acrylate in a solvent containing a star-shaped polymer.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 13, 1983
Date of Patent: December 25, 1984
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
    Inventor: Rudolf J. A. Eckert
  • Patent number: 4358565
Abstract: A modified hydrogenated star-shaped polymer comprising a nucleus, e.g., divinylbenzene, with polymeric arms linked to it is prepared by grafting a hydrogenated star-shaped polymer with a nitrogen-containing polymerizable polar organic compound, e.g., 2-vinylpyridine or 4-vinylpyridine. Such polymers are useful as viscosity index improvers for lube oil compositions, and also possess dispersancy.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: November 9, 1982
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
    Inventor: Rudolf J. A. Eckert
  • Patent number: 4156673
Abstract: A viscosity index-improver for lubricating oil compositions is disclosed. This viscosity index improver is a hydrogenated star-shaped polymer comprising a poly(poly-alkenyl coupling agent) nucleus and at least four polymeric arms linked to the nucleus wherein the arms are hydrogenated homopolymers and copolymers of conjugated dienes, hydrogenated copolymers of conjugated dienes and monoalkenyl arenes, or mixtures thereof.
