  • Patent number: 5142783
Abstract: A method of correcting tooth system errors in a gear pairing in which one of the gears is mounted on a component to be driven. The mounted gear is first non-positively supported on the shaft of the component to be driven with a relatively small clearance between the gear and shaft, the error in the angle of gear rotation then is measured by a separate measuring facility in a single-flank rolling test, and the gear is radially displaced to correct for the error in the angle of rotation. The gear then is positively connected to the shaft without clearance between the gear and shaft by a plastic layer interposed between the shaft and an annular groove in the mounting bore of the gear.

  • Patent number: 5125334
Abstract: In order to improve mechanical positive synchronization in a sheet-fed printing machine between gripper carriages guided in wave-like fashion through printing units on endless chains and the associated impression cylinder, the impression cylinders (1) have twice the diameter of the plate and blanket cylinders (2, 3). Sprocket wheels (34), also of twice the diameter of the blanket cylinders, are fixed on the ends of the double-size impression cylinders (1) and on them there are disposed two diametrically opposite gripper carriage locating and fixing devices (24-32) which are adjustable both radially and tangentially and which can also be used to bring the different printing plates into register with one another on the printed sheet (38).

  • Patent number: 4869603
Abstract: To provide a snug-fitting bearing for journalling the spindle end of a printing press cylinder, a flanged bearing sleeve is disposed in a bore in the press frame and an anti-friction plastic material which compensates for the bearing play is injected into an external annular groove in the bearing sleeve of considerably less width than the depth of the bore in the press frame. Preferably, the bore is pretreated with a volatile release agent and the plastic material cures in situ to become a narrow bearing ring in the groove. The bearing sleeve may have eccentric annular shoulders on either side of the groove and a thin annular metal bushing may be interposed between the cylinder spindle and the interior of the sleeve bearing.

  • Patent number: 4693362
Abstract: A chain conveyor for the delivery device of printing presses has gripper systems (1) being carrier directly by the endless conveying chains (2). The gripper system (1) is embodied by a unitary aluminum basic member (6). A steel tube (9) is cast into the basic member (6) at its center of gravity and over its whole length and optimizes the flexural and torsional rigidity of the gripper system (1).

  • Patent number: 4451029
Abstract: A device for registering a sheet against a side stop on the feed table of a printing press which includes a suction head flushly recessed in the table and reciprocated for lateral shifting movement, a draft of suction being applied to the head timed with the lateral shifting movement so that the sheet is affirmatively shifted into contact with the side stop. Subsequently, a puff of air is applied to the head timed with the completion of the shifting movement to free the sheet from the head in readiness for removal of the sheet from the table. An auxiliary nozzle recessed in the table in a position adjacent the head is permanently connected to a source of air pressure and arranged approximately parallel to the surface of the table for producing a moving film of air under the sheet in the direction of the side stop to ensure that the sheet remains against the side stop when the suction is no longer effective and until the sheet is removed from the table.

  • Patent number: 4264068
Abstract: A side lay assembly for lateral registration of sheets fed periodically along the surface of the feed table of a printing press. A sucker having a sucking surface flush with the feed table is slidably mounted on a sucker tube for movement toward and away from the table side guide. A side lay drive shaft, coupled to the press drive, is spaced below the sucker and parallel with the tube. A cam on the shaft engaging a cam follower on the sucker causes the sucker to move toward the side guide timed with the arrival of a sheet. An air valve is provided in the form of a valve disc close coupled to the cam for connecting the sucker tube to a source of suction in phase with lateral movement of the sucker so that the arriving sheet is urged into engagement with the side guide. To vary the degree of suction an adjustable bleed valve is interposed between the air valve and the source of suction.

  • Patent number: 4260149
Abstract: A mechanism for registering a sheet against front and side stops on the feed table of a printing press, employing a suction head recessed in the table and reciprocated for lateral shifting movement in the direction of the side stop timed with the arrival of the sheet. The head is connected to a source of suction so that the sheet is shifted into contact with the side stop. The head has intentional play in the direction of feeding movement of the sheet, as measured from a reference position, and is freely rockable about its axis, so that the sheet is free to settle against the front stop at the same time that it is being shifted toward the side stop. A conduit connected to a source of a pressure is provided for applying a short puff of air to the head, timed with completion of the shifting movement, to free the sheet from the head in readiness for removal of the sheet from the table. The return movement of the head is utilized to reverse the play and to restore the head to reference position.

  • Patent number: 4222326
Abstract: A multi-color printing press including a first press unit and a second press unit with a conveyor interposed between them, the conveyor including a sprocket drum cooperating with a transfer drum on the second press unit. A pair of plenums having apertured faces alined with one another are arranged closely adjacent the feed side of the sprocket drum, the plenums being connected to a source of vacuum. The plenums are cammingly coupled to the press drive for axial spreading movement during passage of a sheet so that the faces of the plenums progressively wipe away any longitudinally extending as well as laterally extending wrinkles in the sheet as the sheet becomes progressively supported on the sprocket drum for sequential passage of the sheet in smooth condition and in accurate register via the sprocket and transfer drums, the action of the plenums being effective both in the recto and verso printing modes.
