    Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for handling bar-shaped material, such as tubes, beyond a plant for manufacturing and/or machining same, comprising the steps of sub-dividing the material moving out of the plant by means of a severing device, sorting the cut lengths of material into at least two groups and feeding said sorted lengths to at least two cooling beds, conveying the cut lengths from the first cooling bed and subjecting them to substantially automatic continuous after-processing and conveying the cut lengths from the second cooling bed, after intermediate storage subjecting them at the second cooling bed to at least partially manual individual after-processing.
