    Abstract: Preventive as well as therapeutic treatment to alleviate the symptoms of disturbed keratinization, consisting of the topical application of a solution, gel, lotion, cream, ointment, stick, powder or spray containing one or more cysteic acid compounds, is disclosed. The compounds include free acid, ammonium salt, amine salt, metal chelate and metallic salt forms of cysteic acid, cysteine sulfinic acid and homocysteic acid. The efficacious compositions may include the active ingredients present in a total amount of from 0.1 to 30 percent by weight. Topical application to affected areas has been found to achieve from a substantial to a complete remission of dry skin, keratoses, warts and palmar and plantar hyperkeratosis. Used as a hair dressing, the compositions have been found to give the hair excellent grooming and luster.

    Abstract: Stabilized water-in-oil emulsions useful as vehicles for cosmetics and for therapeutic compositions to be topically applied is disclosed. The emulsions utilize a concentration of from 0.001 to 0.9% by weight of at least one of the aluminum containing compound as a primary emulsion stabilizer. A stable water-in-oil emulsion may also be formulated by utilizing from 0.001 to 0.2% of magnesium hydroxide or magnesium oxide as a primary emulsion stabilizer. This emulsion may be acidified to a desired pH with secondary emulsion stabilizer such as phosphoric acid, metallic chloride or metallic chlorohydroxide.

The therapeutic composition may include one or more of corticosteroids typically present in a total amount of from 0.01 to 2 percent and one or more of hydroxy acids or related compounds present in a total amount from 0.01 to 2 percent by weight of the total composition. Topical application of the therapeutic composition in a solution, cream, lotion, gel or ointment has been found to achieve a substantial increase in antiinflammatory action of corticosteroids.

In a prophylactic treatment topical application to skin areas of axilla, crotch (inguinalperineum) and feet has been found to prevent the formation of malodor.

    Abstract: A composition and method for producing pigmentation in skin or hair by topical application is described. The composition comprises as active ingredients one or more esters of DOPA wherein the esterifying radical is an alkyl, aryl or alkylene radical having up to 12 carbon atoms, or methyl dopate. The pigmentation producing ester is dissolved in a pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle which may be alkaline, neutral or acidic, and may contain peroxides or other oxidizing agents. Skin treated by topical application of the composition of this invention has been found to be protected against sun burn and against erythema from ultraviolet light in proportion to the extent of the pigmentation produced.
