  • Patent number: 11525553
Abstract: A luminaire (500) comprising a linearly polarized light source (200) and a collimating reflector (301) arranged to collimate light from the light source towards an optical axis OA. The reflective inner surface of the reflector comprises at least one set of grooves (306), or four spaced zones of grooves, which each extend in a respective plane including the optical axis. Each groove comprises two flat side surfaces to cause light from the light source to undergo a double reflection in the groove, to avoid rotation of each beamlet and thus to reduce loss of imaging of the source. This partly preserves the linear polarization of the source, for use in reducing glare in displays or from lights on the road, or enhancing sparkle for illuminating jewellery.

  • Publication number: 20220191703
Abstract: A communication system, method and apparatus that enable combined illumination and communication of data (e.g. LiFi) by achieving extended coverage using just three or more channels. The combined illumination and communication system comprises an arrangement of luminaires as a regular Bravais pattern based on a convex quadrilateral unit cell on the ceiling. Using a spatial reuse pattern of at least three optical color channels, full coverage for the users in that space can be achieved. The predetermined reuse pattern is configured so that a first channel and a second channel are distributed over the Bravais pattern and a third channel is used to cover dead spot areas where the coverage areas of the first and second channels contact each other. Interference can be avoided to achieve full contiguous coverage without requiring the luminaires to synchronize or to communicate with each other.

  • Patent number: 10393349
Abstract: An optical arrangement, comprises first and second optical elements. The first optical plate is for collimating light from a light source to generate collimated light, which is provided to the second optical element. The second optical element acts an optical integrator homogenizing the light. The second optical element further generates a light output beam which has a spread of output angles which is dependent on the position. This means that the output spread of output angles can be controlled by controlling the light reaching the second optical plate and thus by controlling the illuminated area on the second optical plate. This can be achieved by selection of the relative positions of the source and the optical plates.

  • Patent number: 10222025
Abstract: A light diffuser is formed of a slab of material which has opposing first and second main surfaces, wherein each surface comprises an array of light directing facets. Each light directing facet of the first surface directs incident light through the slab predominantly to a corresponding paired light directing facet of the second surface, and at least some different light directing facets of the first surface direct incident light to their corresponding paired light directing facets of the second surface in different directions. The angular profile at the exit can be controlled, and for example does not need to diverge more at the output of the diffuser than at the input.

  • Patent number: 10180233
Abstract: A luminaire comprising: a light source (10); an exit window (20) for light from the light source; and a diffuser (25; 200a; 200b; 200c; 200d) at the exit window for diffusing the light. The diffuser comprises a plurality of micro-optical elements (203a; 203b; 204, 205; 206, 207). Each micro-optical element is adapted to redirect light from the light source, so that the redirected light from each element emerges from the diffuser at a respective predetermined polar angle (?). The plurality of micro-optical elements comprise first micro-optical elements, which redirect light from the light source into a first range of polar angles, wherein the first optical elements occupy a greater proportion of the area of the diffuser in a first neighborhood than in a second neighborhood, and wherein the first neighborhood receives less light from the light source than the second neighborhood. Also provided is a method of designing and manufacturing a diffuser for such a luminaire.

  • Patent number: 9946055
Abstract: A beam shaping system is for example for use over an array of light sources. An array of beam shaping units is arranged in a general plane, each beam shaping unit comprising a central refracting area, an intermediate total internal reflection area for processing of light from a light source beneath the central area, and an outer total internal reflection area for processing light from the nearest light source and an adjacent light source. This outer area essentially extends the useful size of the adjacent beam shaping unit to improve the beam shaping performance and/or the optical efficiency.

  • Publication number: 20160235306
Abstract: Systems and methods for non-invasive thermal monitoring use multiple coupling sensors and temperature sensors in order to determine multiple temperatures of a patient. The sensors may be carried by support structure such as a wrap, blanket, mattress, and similar structures. Signals generated by the coupling sensors reflect coupling strength and/or reliability between sensors and the patient. Positional information/mapping of temperature information can be derived from the coupling sensors, image sensors, and/or the variation of the temperature profile itself over time. The measurements may be used to construct a thermal (full-body) profile of the patient and provide targeted thermal control (heating/cooling).
