  • Patent number: 5972329
Abstract: An improved hydrocarbon tolerant, aerosol hair spray resin composition includes a fixative polymer which is a tetrapolymer consisting essentially of (1) vinyl acetate, (2) vinyl neodecanoate or vinyl neononanoate, (3) monoisobutyl maleate and (4) N-t-butyl acrylamide, N-t-octyl acrylamide, or isobornyl (meth)acrylate, in a molar ratio from 10:10:15:1 to 26:1:15:1, preferably in a molar ratio of 12.5:7.5:15:1, exhibits advantageous small spray particle size, short tack and drying times, and hydrolytic stability, which are the desired performance characteristics on hair.

  • Patent number: 5645859
Abstract: A process is provided for making a free-flowing powder of a complex of an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) and/or a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) and a vinylpyrrolidone (PVP) polymer, copolymer or graft polymers, as the complexing agent, at high acid loadings, preferably 20-60% by weight. The presence of VP polymers, copolymers or graft polymers in the complex reduces the skin irritation effect of the acid when applied to the skin of the user. The process involves applying an aqueous solution or slurry of the acid to PVP, and, substantially immediately thereafter, evaporating the water to form a free-flowing powder of the complex of the acid and VP polymers, copolymers or graft polymers.

  • Patent number: 5329021
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the purification of a crude liquid N-vinylpyrrolidone product which comprises (I) product rectification by (a) subjecting said crude product containing at least 0.3 weight % of impurities to a temperature of between about 1.degree. and 5.degree. below the freezing point of said crude liquid to form a vinyl pyrrolidone crystalline phase and a liquid residue phase in a first crystallization step; (b) separating said liquid phase from said crystalline phase; (c) allowing said separated crystalline phase to warm gradually so as to liquify said crystals and (d) subjecting the liquified crystals of vinyl pyrrolidone to between 1 and 3 additional crystallization steps, each carried out by gradually cooling the liquified vinyl pyrrolidone to a temperature above that of the preceding crystallization step up to a temperature of 14.4.degree. • Patent number: 5206385
Abstract: Urea-hydrogen peroxide-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in the form of a free-flowing powder is stable against decomposition in water and alcohol solvents. The product is obtained by spraying an aqueous solution of urea-hydrogen peroxide onto a fluidized bed of PVP and drying; it contains about 5%-20% by weight H.sub.2 O.sub.2 and less than about 5% water. The urea-hydrogen peroxide solution is applied onto the fluidized PVP bed at a predetermined rate, suitably about 0.5-30 g of solution/minute/kg PVP in the bed, and, preferably, about 1-3 g/min/kg PVP.

  • Patent number: 5177113
Abstract: A free-standing, porous foam product comprising an integral network of PVP molecules hydrogen-bonded to H.sub.2 O.sub.2 molecules, optionally including a water-soluble gelling agent; e.g. hydroxyethyl cellulose; in an amount up to 60% by weight of the product, its PVP content being about 25-90% by weight of the product, and the H.sub.2 O.sub.2 content being about 5-24% by weight. In the absence of a gelling agent, the product has a bulk density of about 0.3 to about 0.5 g/cc and a porosity of about 60-70%. When a gelling agent is present in the product, its bulk density and porosity of the product is substantially reduced and, accordingly, it has a more foam-like structure and appearance.

  • Patent number: 5077047
Abstract: A process for the production of PVP-H.sub.2 O.sub.2 products in the form of free-flowing powders is described in which a fluidized bed maintained at a reaction temperature of about room temperature to 60.degree. C. is contacted with finely divided droplets of a 30 to 85% by weight aqueous H.sub.2 O.sub.2 solution. Preferably the fluidized bed temperature is about 35.degree.-45.degree. C., a 50-70% H.sub.2 O.sub.2 solution is used, and the feed rate of introduction of the H.sub.2 O.sub.2 solution is about 5-50 g/minute/kg PVP present. The PVP-H.sub.2 O.sub.2 product preferably contains about 15-24%, preferably 18-22%, H.sub.2 O.sub.2 (1:1 molar ratio) and less than about 5% water.
