  • Publication number: 20100143611
Abstract: A process for forming an asymmetric membrane comprises applying a polymer comprising electron beam reactive groups onto a porous base membrane to form a coating; irradiating the coated porous base membrane with a high energy source; and permanently grafting the electron beam reactive groups to the porous base membrane to form a coating that fills the pores of the membrane.

  • Publication number: 20100077529
Abstract: An article includes a porous membrane having pores, a first selectively permeable coating supported by the membrane and a component protective against delamination of the selectively permeable coating from the porous membrane and/or any other coatings applied thereto. The first selectively permeable coating includes an antichemical, antibiological, antiradiological and/or antimicrobial agent. The protective component may be provided alone, or as an element of the first selectively permeable coating, or, a second selectively permeable coating. A laminate and methods of providing these are also provided.

  • Publication number: 20100056652
Abstract: A process of forming an integral hydrophilic membrane from a porous hydrophobic membrane includes exposing a porous hydrophobic polymer membrane to a plasma, wherein the plasma contains reactive carbon dioxide species configured to covalently bond carboxylic functional groups to a surface of the polymer membrane and form the integral hydrophilic membrane.

  • Publication number: 20090205116
Abstract: An article includes a membrane having pores and a selectively permeable coating supported by the membrane. The selectively permeable coating includes an antimicrobial agent in an amount that is sufficient to chemically react with a chemical or microbial agent to reduce the biological activity of the chemical or microbial agent or increase an amount of time for a significant amount of unreacted biologically active chemical or microbial agent to pass through the article. A laminate and methods of providing these are also provided.

  • Publication number: 20090191398
Abstract: The present invention provides a membrane useful for water purification comprising a porous base membrane and a hydrophilic coating disposed on the porous base membrane. The hydrophilic coating comprises structural units derived from a hydrophilic polymer and structural units derived from a first electron beam reactive group, and structural units derived from a second electron beam reactive group. The hydrophilic polymer has a number average molecular weight of greater than 2500 Daltons and comprises at least two electron beam reactive groups having different structures. The hydrophilic coating is covalently bound to the porous base membrane through structural units derived from the electron beam reactive groups. Also disclosed are processes for forming and employing the membrane.
