  • Publication number: 20240028882
Abstract: A beam for use in a lattice of beams of a mechanical neural-network (MNN) which can form a metamaterial configured to learn a set of properties by exposure to continuous external loads. Each beam of the lattice is configured to change its stiffness in response to external load input. A lattice of the MNNs is configured to learn by tuning the stiffness of its constituent beams in the MNN. The lattice can be either two or three dimensional, and configured to occupy volumes of arbitrary shape. The MNN has multiple layers of nodes, wherein each said node is analogous to the neurons within an artificial neural network.

  • Patent number: 8652778
Abstract: The invention provides methods to detect molecular recognition events. The invention also provides methods to detect the presence of or identify a target species based on its interaction with one or more probe species. The methods of the invention are based on amplification of the signal due to each molecular recognition event. The amplification is achieved through photopolymerization, with the polymer formed being associated with the molecular recognition event. In one aspect, a fluorescent polymer, a magnetic polymer, a radioactive polymer or an electrically conducting polymer can form the basis of detection and amplification. In another aspect, a polymer gel swollen with a fluorescent solution, a magnetic solution, a radioactive solution or an electrically conducting solution can form the basis of detection and amplification. In another aspect, detectable particles can be included in the polymer formed. In another aspect, sufficient polymer forms to be detectable by visual inspection.

  • Publication number: 20090137405
Abstract: The invention provides methods for highly-specific detection of hybridization of single stranded nucleic acids. The invention also provides methods for target identification which rely on this highly-specific hybridization detection. Targets suitable for detection include, but are not limited to, nucleic acid biomarkers. The methods of the invention can employ an on-chip, DNA polymerase-dependent labeling scheme termed primer extension (PEX) to couple biotinylated deoxyribonucleotide triphosphate (dNTP) molecules to nucleic acid hybrids bound to a solid substrate, allowing for subsequent recognition by biotin-binding-protein-labeled photoinitiators. Surface-initiated polymerization from these surface bound photoinitiators can lead to the formation of macroscale amounts of polymeric material, thereby amplifying the signal from the initial molecular recognition event.

  • Patent number: 7306500
Abstract: The present invention is a device which redirects motor exhaust fumes a distance away from a boat. This device can be applied to a boat's propulsion motor or to its generator for purposes of preventing carbon monoxide poisoning of a boat's passengers. The device includes an adaptor for attaching to a boat motor exhaust port and an elongate extension hose attached to the adaptor. The extension hose is made buoyant through use of a plurality of flotation collars disposed along the length of the hose. An extension rod is inserted into the collars to keep the hose rigid and the distal exhaust end of the hose directed away from a boat to which the device is attached.
