  • Patent number: 11843503
Abstract: Techniques and systems for notifying a client device regarding a server device that is at least partially out of service are disclosed. An example process may include determining that a server device, such as a PGW or a SMF, is at least partially out of service, setting a flag to a value indicative of the server device being at least partially out of service, determining that a client device, such as a PCRF or a PCF, sent a message to the server device, and sending, to the client device, in response to the determining that the client device sent the message to the server device, and based at least in part on the value of the flag, a notification indicating that the server device is at least partially out of service. In this way, the client device can take appropriate action based on the out-of-service condition of the server device.

  • Patent number: 11784872
Abstract: Techniques and systems for suppressing messages destined for a server device that is at least partially out-of-service are disclosed. An example process performed by a client device, such as a PCRF or a PCF, may include sending a message to a server device, such as a PGW or a SMF, receiving, in response to the sending of the message to the server device, a notification indicating that the server device is at least partially out of service, and refraining, based at least in part on the receiving of the notification, from sending one or more messages to the server device until the client device is notified that the server device is back in service. Suppressing messages in this manner reduces extraneous traffic in the network to conserve computing resources (e.g., network bandwidth resources).

  • Patent number: 9830214
Abstract: A Diameter Routing Agent detects a communication failure with a first policy server, and responsively transfers a policy request to a second policy server identifying a data communication session, the communication failure with the first policy server, a first communication policy, a session requirement, and a user communication device. The second policy server responsively processing the identification of the data communication session and the communication failure with the first policy server to accept policy control of the data communication session for the user communication device and transferring a second policy response to the Diameter Routing Agent indicating a second communication policy for the data communication session based on the user communication device and the session requirement. The data communication network exchanges additional user data with the user communication device based on the second communication policy.

  • Patent number: 9515837
Abstract: Examples disclosed herein provide systems, methods, and software for providing default policy information from a policy and charging rules function (PCRF). In one example, a PCRF is configured to identify an interruption in communications with an online charging server. Responsive to this identification, the PCRF transfers a default policy requirement notification to a packet data network gateway. Based on the default policy requirement notification, the packet data network gateway transfers a default policy rule request to the PCRF. In response to the request, the PCRF identifies default policy rules and transfers the default policy rules to the packet data network gateway to be implemented.

  • Patent number: 9191265
Abstract: A communication system controls a Long Term Evolution (LTE) media session with an Internet Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). An LTE Packet Gateway (P-GW) establishes an IMS bearer between User Equipment (UE) and an IMS server. The IMS server receives a media session request over the IMS bearer and processes the media session request to establish the media session including transferring a media session instruction for delivery to an LTE Policy, Charging, and Rules Function (PCRF) system. The IMS server detects a PCRF bypass condition for the media session, and in response, transfers a UE session instruction for delivery to the UE to use the IMS bearer for the media session. The UE and IMS server exchange media data for the media session over the IMS bearer through the LTE P-GW.

  • Patent number: 9125106
Abstract: A gateway may establish connectivity between a user equipment device (UE) and a network at a Quality of Service (QOS) indicated in a policy profile of the UE. Thereafter, the gateway may receive information indicating a change to the QOS and may transmit the information for receipt by the UE. If the gateway fails to receive an acceptance response from the UE, the gateway may then determine whether to update the QOS in the policy profile of the UE. On one hand, the gateway may update the QOS in the policy profile if the change to the QOS is a downgrade. On the other hand, the gateway may keep the QOS in the policy profile unchanged if the change to the QOS is an upgrade. The gateway may then enforce the QOS of the connectivity based on the policy profile of the UE.
