Patent number: 11274617Abstract: A system includes an engine adapted to output a torque, a parasitic load adapted to receive a portion of the torque from the engine, and a controller communicably coupled to the parasitic load. The controller is configured to determine an actual exhaust temperature value of an exhaust gas flow exiting the engine and a minimum fuel amount to be injected into the engine. The controller is configured to compare the actual exhaust temperature value with an exhaust temperature threshold value of the exhaust gas flow to determine a first difference between the actual exhaust temperature value and the exhaust temperature threshold value. The controller is configured to determine a target torque output of the engine based on the first difference and the minimum fuel amount. The controller is configured to cause the torque to be increased to attain the target torque output using the parasitic load.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 2020Date of Patent: March 15, 2022Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Suman Goli, Andrew Nathan Schifferer, Kirk Anderson, Patrick William Sullivan, Jr., Ryan Robert Stoffel, Phillip Alvin Hartz

Publication number: 20210340999Abstract: An accumulator includes an accumulator housing defining a first end, a second end opposite to the first end, and a hollow chamber. The accumulator also includes a piston slidably disposed within the hollow chamber and adapted to displace between the first and second ends. The piston divides the hollow chamber into a gaseous chamber proximate to the first end of the accumulator housing and a hydraulic chamber proximate to the second end of the accumulator housing. Further, the piston defines a first side surface in communication with the gaseous chamber and a second side surface spaced apart from the first side surface. The second side surface is in communication with the hydraulic chamber. A cavity of the piston is in communication with the second side surface and extends from the second side surface towards the first side surface. The cavity is in fluid communication with the hydraulic chamber.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 1, 2020Publication date: November 4, 2021Applicant: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Ryan Robert Stoffel, John Michael Connelly, Beau Daniel Kuipers, Satchit Pradip Panse

Patent number: 9970347Abstract: A cooling system is provided for an engine. The cooling system may have an air cooler configured to cool intake air being supplied to the engine. The cooling system may also have a sensor configured to generate a temperature signal indicative of a temperature of the intake air and a fan in proximity to the air cooler. The cooling system may further have a controller in communication with the sensor and the fan. The controller may be configured to cause the fan to operate at a speed that is a function of the temperature signal when the temperature of the intake air is above a threshold temperature. The controller may further be configured to selectively cause the fan to pulse when the temperature of the intake air drops below the threshold temperature.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2016Date of Patent: May 15, 2018Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Brian Douglas Hoff, Ryan Robert Stoffel, Mark Edward Rettig
