Patent number: 12616460Abstract: A tensioner tool for assessing joint laxity is disclosed. The tensioner tool comprises a pair of pivotally coupled arms, each arm comprising a proximal handle portion, a distal portion, and an insertion tip selectively coupled to the distal portion. The pair of arms pivot between a compressed configuration for insertion within the joint and an expanded configuration for distraction of the joint by applying a force to the handles, thus spreading the insertion tips. The tensioner tool also comprises a force sensor configured to measure the force applied to the handle portion and a positional sensor configured to measure a separation distance between the pair of arms. The tensioner tool also comprises a processor configured to calculate a distraction force at the insertion tips based on the measured force and to calculate a tip distance between the insertion tips based on the measured separation distance.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 2021Date of Patent: May 5, 2026Assignees: SMITH & NEPHEW, INC., SMITH & NEPHEW ORTHOPAEDICS AG, SMITH & NEPHEW ASIA PACIFIC PTE. Publication number: 20250127549Abstract: An impactor and methods of operation of an impactor. The impactor includes an electromagnetic component that has a stationary electromagnetic housing and a moving magnet actuator, a striker, and one or more strike plates. The striker is coupled to an object. The stationary electromagnetic housing includes a coil that receives an electric current. The moving magnet actuator includes one or more magnets. The magnets generate a high potential magnetic field that interacts with the electric current applied to the coil disposed within the stationary electromagnetic housing and trigger translation movement of the moving magnet actuator. The electromagnetic field, generated as a result of application of the electric current to the coil, forces the moving magnet actuator to translate. Translation of the moving magnet actuator causes the moving magnet actuator to strike at least one of the strike plates to thereby translate the striker.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 15, 2024Publication date: April 24, 2025Applicants: Smith & Nephew, Inc., Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics AG, Smith & Nephew Asia Pacific PTE. LimitedInventors: Brett Bell, Ryan Sheehan

Patent number: 12036034Abstract: Disclosed herein is a joint evaluation device and corresponding systems and methods for evaluating ligaments and other soft tissue connections between, for example, a tibia and a femur at a knee joint. The joint evaluation device being arranged and configured to induce and measure forces while positions of the tibia and femur are monitored. Some embodiments use a computer assisted surgery device to track positions of the tibia and the femur, and may include a computing device configured to evaluate the forces measured between a first engagement portion and a second engagement portion of the joint evaluation device to output information related to the status of the ligament and other soft tissue connections prior to any bone resections being made to the tibia or the femur.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2023Date of Patent: July 16, 2024Assignees: Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics AG, Smith & Nephew Asia Pacific Pte. LimitedInventors: Suraj Rama, Samuel C. Dumpe, Ryan Sheehan, Benjamin McCandless
