  • Patent number: 4575342
Abstract: A tilt locking and shock absorbing arrangement for a marine outboard drive embodying a single cylinder and piston assembly for controlling the tilt and trim positions of the drive and for further absorbing shocks applied to it. An accumulator arrangement is provided having gas over oil and is valved into the system in such a way as to prevent passage of the gas into the shock absorbing device per se. In addition, an arrangement is provided whereby the drive may be manually positioned without necessitating the operator's use of one hand to operate the mechanism when the desired position is reached.

  • Patent number: 4570776
Abstract: Several embodiments of improved detent devices for elements such as dog clutches. In each embodiment, the detent includes a holding detent for holding the dog clutch in a neutral position and an accelerating detent for accelerating the dog clutch element to its engaged position. In each embodiment, the accelerating detent is effective before the holding detent has been fully released. In some embodiments, the dog clutch element is axially movable and in other embodiments it is rotatable.

  • Patent number: 4559018
Abstract: Two embodiments of improved compact outboard motors that are designed so that the power head does not encroach into the associated watercraft forwardly of the hull when the motor is tilted up about its tilt axis. In each embodiment, the internal combustion engine of the power head is located in such a way that it can be conveniently serviced and yet will note encroach when the motor is tilted up. In one embodiment, the engine is disposed with its output shaft extending transversely and its cylinders inclined rearwardly. In the other embodiment, the cylinders are aligned and extend vertically so that the engine output shaft extends perpendicularly to the associated hull.

  • Patent number: 4557696
Abstract: A hydraulic arrangement for controlling tilt and trim of an outboard drive. The hydraulic arrangement comprises a single cylinder assembly having two separate cylinder bores in which separate pistons are supported for reciprocation. Each piston has a piston rod that is directly connected to a corresponding element of the outboard drive so as to insure against any wear or play in the system and to afford a compact assembly.

  • Patent number: 4551104
Abstract: A tilt locking and shock absorbing arrangement for a marine outboard drive embodying a single cylinder and piston assembly for controlling the tilt and trim positions of the drive and for further absorbing shocks applied to it. An arrangement is provided whereby the trim position may be manually controlled without necessitating the operator's use of one hand to operate the mechanism when the desired position is reached. Popping up action is permitted in either normal or shallow water conditions but inadvertent popping up under shallow water, reverse drive is precluded.

  • Patent number: 4545769
Abstract: Two embodiments of hydraulic control systems for outboard drives that permit the motor to pop up when an underwater obstacle is struck and return to its normal condition once the obstacle is cleared under a controlled force. Each embodiment includes a simplified arrangement wherein the motor may be raised from a normal running condition to a shallow water trim position and will be held hydraulically in the shallow water position. Each embodiment also permits popping up of the motor from the shallow water position when an underwater obstacle is struck. In one embodiment, the motor is permitted to return to the shallow water position once the obstacle is cleared whereas in the other embodiment, the motor returns to its normal condition once the underwater obstacle is cleared.

  • Patent number: 4527441
Abstract: A shifting arrangement for a propelling unit for a vessel embodying an improved and simplified unitary control rod for operating a clutching element of a reversing gear. The control rod is long and torsionally resilient and a detent cooperates with the lower end of the control rod for achieving a snap action gear engagement.

  • Patent number: 4521202
Abstract: A tilt locking and shock absorbing arrangement for a marine outboard drive that normally holds the drive in a normal position against driving thrust both in forward and rearward directions and yet which permits the drive to pop up when an underwater obstacle is struck. The arrangement also permits the drive to return to its normal position once the obstacle has been passed. An arrangement is provided for permitting the motor to be tilted up without restriction and also to be adjusted in trim condition and retained there while still maintaining the aforenoted shock absorbing capabilities.
