  • Patent number: 6934463
Abstract: An information processing apparatus and an information processing method are capable of preventing information from being copied illegally. To put it in detail, a hash function and a service key are stored in advance in an EEPROM of a DVD player serving as a source. In an EEPROM of a personal computer (PC) serving as a sink, on the other hand, its ID and a license key are stored beforehand. The DVD player requests the PC to transmit the ID. The DVD player then applies the hash function to data resulting from concatenation of the ID with the service key to generate a license key (=hash (ID?service_key)). Subsequently, the DVD player generates a source side common session key and encrypts the session key by using the generated license key. Then, the DVD player transmits the encrypted source side common session key to the PC.

  • Patent number: 6911974
Abstract: An information processing system and method are disclosed in which information processing is performed in a highly efficient manner using an enabling key block (EKB) on the basis of a tree structure including category subtrees. A key tree is formed so as to include a plurality of subtrees serving as category trees categorized in accordance with categories and managed by category entities. An EKB including data produced by selecting a path in a tree and encrypting a higher-level key in the selected path using a lower-level key in the selected path. The resultant EKB is provided to a device. Distribution of EKB's is managed on the basis of an EKB type definition list representing the correspondence between an EKB type identifier and one or more identification data identifying one or more category trees that can process an EKB of an EKB type specified by the EKB type identifier.

  • Publication number: 20050138357
Abstract: Methods and systems for controlling the distribution of digital content are provided. A license holder acquires protected content and an original digital license to the protected content from a content provider system. The license holder in turn delegates all or part of the grants in that original license to other qualified devices or clients. The content remains in its original, protected or encrypted form while it is delivered from the license holder to the client along with a digital sublicense that the client receives from the original license holder, whereupon the content can then be rendered. The original digital license defines or governs the conditions under which such delegation occurs, and includes terms under which such delegation is permitted to continue in order to enforce the intent of the content provider.

  • Publication number: 20050119967
Abstract: The present invention relates to an information processing apparatus and method, a program storage medium, and a program for distributing usage rights for individual smaller details without placing a burden on a client. A usage right held by a content holder server 6 is provided to a license server 4. The license server 4 divides the usage right provided by the content holder server 6 into, for example, a playback-only usage right and a playback-and-checkout usage right. A client 1 pays 10 yen to obtain the playback usage right. The client 1 pays additional 30 yen to obtain the playback-and-checkout usage right. In other words, the playback-only usage right is upgraded to the playback-and-checkout usage right. The present invention is applicable to a server for providing content via a network.

  • Publication number: 20050075981
Abstract: The present invention relates to an information managing apparatus and method, a recording medium, and a program in which unauthorized use of content can be prevented. A ripping module 91 of a client 1 retrieves the content recorded on a CD 81. In the client 1, a content ID for identifying the content and a unique ID unique to the client 1 are generated, and these IDs are added to the content retrieved by the ripping module 91. A usage right containing the usage conditions of the content, etc., is generated and saved. The usage right includes information indicating that an apparatus (client) having the same ID to the unique ID added to the content is only allowed to play back the content. The present invention is applicable to an information processing apparatus such as a personal computer.

  • Publication number: 20050060334
Abstract: The present invention relates to an information processing apparatus and method, a recording medium, and a program in which usage status information necessary to use content can be managed on a service-by-service basis. The usage status information is stored in a management area for a service node in association with a content ID (CID) and a usage-right ID for management. Accordingly, since the usage status information is managed on a service-by-service basis, even if a piece of usage status information is broken or tampered with, the effects thereof can be blocked within one management area. In other words, the content whose usage status information is stored in a management area in which usage status information which is tampered with is stored cannot be used; however, the content whose usage status information is stored in other management areas can be used without difficulty. The present invention is applicable to a personal computer.

  • Publication number: 20050044046
Abstract: The present invention relates to an information processing apparatus and method, an information providing apparatus and method, a usage right management apparatus and method, a recording medium, and a program for preventing unauthorized use of content. A root key Kroot is obtained from an EKB of content provided by a content server 3. Using the obtained root key Kroot, data E(Kroot, Kekb) is decrypted, thus obtaining an EKB key Kekeb. A usage right provided by a license server 4 includes data E(Kpub, Ksub), which is decrypted by a private key Kpri to obtain a sub key Ksub. Using the EKB key Kekb and the sub key Ksub, a content key Kc is generated. Using the generated content key Kc, the content is decrypted. The present invention is applicable to a personal computer or the like that uses content provided via a network, such as the Internet.

  • Publication number: 20040243610
Abstract: Even if contents data distributed over a network are once destroyed, the contents data are restored, as the copyright protection is maintained. A PC memorizes backup of distributed music contents on a hard disc, at the same time as it transmits the using log information of the music contents stored in the hard disc to an EMD server. If the music contents in the hard disc are destroyed, the PC acquires the using log information from the EMD server to reproduce the backup data memorized in the hard disc depending on the using log information.

  • Publication number: 20040243808
Abstract: The present invention relates to an information processing apparatus and method and to a program for reliably preventing unauthorized use of content even in the case of a low-throughput content storage device. A CPU selects content to be stored on a content storage device. In step S202, the CPU verifies a first digital signature added to the content. A storage unit stores a usage right. In step S203, the CPU searches the storage unit for the usage right. In step S207, the CPU verifies a second digital signature added to the usage right. The CPU generates alteration detecting data on the basis of information included in the usage right. In step S208, when the content and the usage right are unaltered, the CPU outputs the usage right, the alteration detecting data, and the content to the content storage device. The present invention is applicable to clients in a DRM system.

  • Publication number: 20040210762
Abstract: The present invention relates to an information processing apparatus, an information processing method, a recording medium, and a program for importing and exporting a content with information missing controlled. A CPU extracts a sound track contained in the content in step S301, and converts a format of the extracted sound track into a format compatible with a memory stick in step S302. The CPU generates a predetermined file from data contained in the content and excluding the sound track in step S304. In step S306, the CPU attaches reference information of the sound track to the file. In step S307, the CPU controls the writing of the sound track in the converted format and the file to the memory stick. The present invention is applied to clients of a DRM system.
