The process includes providing a biomass hydrolyzate including a C5 sugar, forming a boronic ester or diester of the C5 sugar, extracting the boronic ester of diester of the C5 sugar, precipitating the C5 sugar using a boron capture agent, and isolating the C5 sugar from the precipitate. The isolated C5 sugar is provided in dry form.
