Patent number: 4574925Abstract: A control system for the clutch of a torque converter to allow direct drive operation of the torque converter in more than one transmission drive train speed level. The fluid pressure normally causing coupling of the clutch is interrupted by a blocking device when a change in drive trains occurs resulting in a lower fluid pressure on one of the drive train operating clutches, and that interruption is prolonged by delaying either the imposition of the high fluid pressure on the blocking device in one embodiment or the imposition of the fluid pressure on the clutch in another embodiment.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1983Date of Patent: March 11, 1986Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Sadanori Nishimura, Masaru Yamashita, Hiroyuki Shimada

Patent number: 4570511Abstract: A control system for a hydraulic transmission for a vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine has a low speed clutch and a high speed clutch, both actuated hydraulically. An oil draining line is connected to a low speed clutch when a control valve assembly is in its high speed position. The control valve assembly has an orifice and a drain oil control valve arranged in parallel. The valve is moved toward closed position when there is an increase in the throttle valve opening of the engine driving the hydraulic transmission. The drain oil control valve includes a valve having an intermediate throttling position between open and closed positions. The drain oil control valve is moved to its open position when oil pressure fed to the high speed clutch increases to a predetermined pressure, which pressure varies in response to the opening of the engine throttle valve.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1982Date of Patent: February 18, 1986Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Sadanori Nishimura, Masakazu Maezono

Patent number: 4562905Abstract: An operation control system for a hydraulically operated clutch of a fluid torque converter wherein the clutch mechanically couples the input and output of the torque converter under certain conditions. Pressure chambers on either side of the clutch plate are pressurized to operate the clutch. An orifice through the clutch plate allows flow from one chamber to the other. A regulator valve is connected to both pressure chambers and is responsive thereto. The regulator valve is also responsive to external signals such as vehicle speed and throttle opening to regulate the pressure difference in the two chambers for operation of the clutch.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1984Date of Patent: January 7, 1986Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Sadanori Nishimura, Masakazu Maezono, Keiichi Ishikawa

Patent number: 4488457Abstract: An hydraulic transmission interposed between an engine and the wheels of a vehicle is controlled by hydraulic circuits and hydraulically-operated clutches. A shift valve assembly is supplied with oil pressure in accordance with the extent of opening of the throttle of the engine, as well as vehicle governor pressure acting as a vehicle speed signal. The shift valve assembly not only functions to control operation of hydraulic clutches but also acts as a malfunction-preventive valve which operates to impede engagement of the reverse transmission clutch during forward running of the vehicle at a speed higher than a predetermined vehicle speed, irrespective of the throttle valve opening.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1982Date of Patent: December 18, 1984Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Sadanori Nishimura, Keiichi Ishikawa, Hiroyuki Shimada

Patent number: 4290325Abstract: An apparatus for controlling an oil-pressure-operated transmission for a vehicle, with a transmission having at least two forward speeds driven by oil pressure clutches, a reverse speed using one of these clutches, and a selector for shifting from forward speed to reverse to engage any of the forward and reverse trains. A manual valve is placed in the transmission hydraulic circuit so that when the manual valve is in automatic shift range on the forward running side, the selector is shifted to its forward running side and the oil pressure clutches in the forward driving trains receive pressure oil from an oil pressure source through a shift valve. When the manual valve is in its reverse position, the selector is shifted to its reverse side and oil is ported to the oil pressure clutch used jointly by the forward and reverse driving trains. The manual valve is located in an oil passage between the shift valve and the jointly used oil pressure clutch.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 1979Date of Patent: September 22, 1981Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Sadanori Nishimura
