  • Patent number: 6005838
Abstract: An novel optical information storage media having M information storage decks. Each information storage deck has N information storage layers, and each information storage layer has a pair of information storage structures. Each paired information storage structure has a characteristic wavelength and polarization state, and from which recorded information can be read by a laser beam having similar wavelength and polarization-state characteristics. A novel system is provided for reading the optical information storage media of the present invention. In the illustrative embodiment, an optical storage device of the present invention having M.times.N.times.2 information storage layers can be read using only N laser lines (i.e. spectral components), thereby providing a 2M-fold increase in information storage capacity over prior art systems. The information storage and retrieval system of the present invention is completely backward compatible to allow for the reading of conventional CD-ROM devices.

  • Patent number: 6002518
Abstract: A system for producing and displaying spatially-multiplexed images of three-dimensional imagery for use in stereoscopic viewing thereof substantially free of visual-channel cross-talk and stereoscopic asymmetric distortion. The system includes a display device for displaying micropolarized spatially-multiplexed images using a phase-retarding micropolarization structure. The micropolarization structure has phase-retarding characteristics which introduce phase-retardation error to light associated with the micropolarized spatially-multiplexed image at a particular wavelengths in the visible band, and create visual-channel cross-talk. The system also includes a viewing device for viewing the micropolarized spatially-multiplexed images using a phase-retarding polarizer having phase-retarding characteristics which substantially eliminate the phase-retardation error introduced by micropolarization structure during image display, and thus the visual-channel cross-talk and stereoscopic asymmetric distortion.

  • Patent number: 5886816
Abstract: An electro-optical recording system for recording spatially multiplexed images (SMI) of a 3-D object for use in stereoscopic viewing thereof with high image quality and resolution. A micropolarization panel of electrically passive polarization is employed to produce first and second patterns corresponding to spatially modulated perspective images. These pixel patterns are optically combined to produce a spatially multiplexed image of the 3-D object which can be used for stereoscopic viewing thereof with high image quality and resolution.

  • Patent number: 5680233
Abstract: A transportable image display system having direct and projection viewing modes of operation. The image display system comprises a spatial light modulation structure for spatially modulating the intensity of light produced from a light source, and light diffusing panel of electro-optical construction having a light scattering state in which light being transmitted therethrough is scattered in a diffusive manner, and a light transmission state in which light being transmitted therethrough is transmitted without substantial scattering. In the illustrative embodiments, the spatial light modulation structure can be an electrically-addressable LCD panel, or slide-film structures to be viewed. During the direct viewing mode, light produced from the light source is scattered by the light diffusing panel and spatial intensity modulated by the spatial light modulation structure to form a first image for direct viewing.

  • Patent number: 5599412
Abstract: In color printing, and in the fine arts, cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) color inks are known to possess much higher color saturation and brightness than conventional pigment and dyed based inks. However, prior art CLC ink formulations are inconvenient because in the liquid phase they have to be confined in cells, and in the solid phase, they have to be applied at high temperature, and have to be aligned by some means to produce the optimum color. This invention solves the problem encountered in the CLC prior art, by making pre-aligned CLC platelets or flakes of appropriate thickness and size and mixing them in appropriate host fluids producing a novel CLC ink which can be applied at room temperature and without the need for alignment. The new pre-aligned room temperature CLC ink can be used as a substitute for conventional inks in almost all printing and plotting, and manual drawing and painting. Using the notch filter CLC platelets, the brightness is further enhanced.

  • Patent number: 5565729
Abstract: A process for fabricating microchannel plates produces large area microchannel plates that have channel exit openings as small as 0.5 micron, MTF.about.1, pitch-limited resolution (a factor of 10 potential improvement in resolution) and at a cost of $0.40/sq. centimeter, and with funneling controlled as to configuration and exit opening size and shape. Microchannels may be rectangular in cross section, or rectangular, or trapezoidal, or other configuration, including straight sided, chevron or balloon sided. Microchannels of differing configurations may be interspersed, for reasons of alignment or to control pixel characteristics. Material choice may include glass, ceramic, metal, alloy and plastics, plus dopants. This materials flexibility, and the improved geometrical uniformity lead to higher signal-to-noise ratio and lower outgassing, and to a significant improvement in performance.

  • Patent number: 5553203
Abstract: Pixel data processing system and method for producing a spatial multiplexed image of a 3-D object for use in stereoscopic viewing thereof. The pixel data sets of each pair of first and second perspective (e.g. left and right) images of a 3-D object, are stored in a first and second memory arrays. The pixel data sets of the first and second perspective images are processed in accordance with complimentary spatial modulation functions, so as to produce third and fourth pixel data sets representative of first and second spatially modulated images consisting of first and second pixel patterns, respectively. The pixel data sets of the first and second spatially modulated images are stored in third and fourth memory arrays. The pixel data sets of the first and second spatially modulated images are processed in accordance with a spatial multiplexing function, so as to produce a fifth pixel data set representing a spatially multiplexed image (SMI) of the object.

  • Patent number: 5502481
Abstract: A desktop-based stereoscopic projection display system affording high-resolution stereoscopic and peripheral viewing of three-dimensional color imagery over a field of view of at least 180.degree.. The projection volume required by each image projector of the display system is disposed substantially within the overall display volume of the display system, while maximizing the viewing volume within which the viewer is free to move during interactive stereoscopic viewing sessions. The display system utilizes high-resolution image projectors, keystoning correcting optics and projection-beam folding mirrors which are compactly mounted immediately above the upper volume-boundary surface of the overall display volume of the system, in order to permit the use of three-dimensional display structures having footprints and display volumes that are supportable upon desktops and in other viewing environments characterized by spatial restrictions.

  • Patent number: 5459591
Abstract: The present invention relates to beam steering and scanning devices which utilize an imaging cell which incorporates a solid-state cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) element, an electronically controlled, variable half-wave retarder and a source of circularly polarized light. The CLC element is disposed at an angle (45.degree.) relative to the path along which light from the source is projected and is designed to reflect, at a given wavelength, one circular polarization of light and transmit the other. Using this characteristic, light of one polarization or the other is presented to the variable retarder and depending on whether or not it is actuated, light is either diverted into another orthogonal path or remains in the original path. If another similar imaging cell is disposed in the orthogonal path, light incident on that cell can also be diverted into yet another path or transmitted along the orthogonal path under control of a half-wave retarders associated with said another imaging cells.
