  • Patent number: 11725451
Abstract: Systems and methods of opening a vehicle liftgate based on an interior radar sensor that may be used to detect a user outside the rear of the vehicle are provided. The interior radar sensor may be installed behind the center line of a headliner of the vehicle, and detect the user's head and/or an upper-body gesture through the rear window of the vehicle. e.g., upon detection of a key fob carried by the user outside the vehicle. Upon detection of a valid gesture, e.g., a predetermined pattern of movement, by the user, the liftgate may be actuated to open.

  • Patent number: 11097659
Abstract: The vehicle rear occupant alert system provides alerts corresponding to occupancy of rear seats. The system comprises a door position sensor, an ignition sensor, and an alert system. Further, the alert system comprises a processor and a memory. The door position sensor determines a rear door status between an ajar position and a closed position. The ignition sensor determines an ignition state between an ON state and an OFF state. The alert system is coupled with the sensors. The processor adjusts status of the alert system as armed if the rear door transitions from ajar to closed position and the ignition transitions from OFF to ON state. The alert system notifies and alerts a driver to check the rear seat when the ignition transitions to OFF state. The processor rearms the alert system after the ignition transitions from OFF to ON state within a predefined time.

  • Publication number: 20080249687
Abstract: A restraint control system (40) for an automotive vehicle (10) is illustrated with a first sensor such as a door cavity pressure sensor (28) and a second sensor such as an accelerometer (30). A restraint device (54) is coupled to a controller (52) that controls the operation of the restraint device in response to the first sensor (28) and the second sensor (30). When either the signal from the first sensor or the signal from the second sensor is above a first or second threshold, respectively, the two signals are compared. In response to the comparison, the restraint device (54) is deployed.

  • Patent number: 7284788
Abstract: An energy-absorbing underrun protection system for a vehicle. The energy-absorbing underrun protection system is comprised of a deformable construction adapted for deforming along a longitudinal axis to absorb crash energy. This deformable construction has a torque arm member extending substantially perpendicularly therefrom for receiving an impact load offset from the longitudinal axis and bending the deformable construction toward the impact load.

  • Publication number: 20060125226
Abstract: According to one embodiment, the invention provides for a light truck including a frame with opposing longitudinal frame rails running along each side of the vehicle. The frame rails include at least a leading portion with vertical placement lowered and selected to substantially align with a passenger car energy management structure. In this embodiment, the vertical placement of the leading portion of the light truck frame rails is selected to direct impact energy to a passenger car longitudinal energy management structure, improving vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility in the event of a front longitudinal impact with a passenger car. The present invention also provides embodiments which increase the impact energy absorption capacity of a light truck by providing geometric softening of the frame rails and material softening of the frame rails.

  • Publication number: 20050127645
Abstract: A seat mounting structure is disclosed for reducing injury to vehicle occupants in side impact collisions. The seat mounting structure may include an inflation module, a linkage system, a sensor system, and a side airbag. The inflation module may include an inflatable structure and inflator or a piston device. The linkage system attaches the seat mounting structure to a seat and may help guide the movement of the seat. The sensor system may include a radar sensor and an optical sensor to help the sensor system anticipate an impending side impact. The seat mounting structure mitigates injury to the occupant by moving the occupant vertically up and laterally toward a centerline of the vehicle, thus increasing the space between the sidewall of the vehicle and the occupant. Additionally, the inflation module may comprise an inflatable structure that stiffens a floor structure of the vehicle upon inflation.

  • Publication number: 20050087998
Abstract: An airbag (10) for mounting in the bumper (18) of a motor vehicle (12) is provided. The airbag can have an up-side-down ā€œLā€ shape or a cylindrical shape. Further, multiple bags can be combined within one system. The airbag is configured to cover substantially the width of the vehicle upon deployment and also provide protection to the occupant of a struck vehicle (36) in the event the occupant is partially expelled from the struck vehicle in the direction of the bag. The airbag is combined with an inflation (23), collision sensor (34) and an electronic control unit (38) to form the airbag system.

  • Publication number: 20050068224
Abstract: A system for adjusting a height of a first road vehicle with respect to the ground prior to impacting a second road vehicle is disclosed. The system includes a predictive crash sensor mounted to the first vehicle for sensing the second road vehicle, a control unit, and a height adjustment apparatus. The control unit is in communication with the predicative crash sensor for receiving a predictive crash signal and determining whether the first and the second road vehicles will collide. The height adjustment apparatus is mounted to the first road vehicle and in communication with the control unit. The height adjustment apparatus includes a shock absorber, a bladder, and a first valve. The shock absorber is mounted at a first end to a vehicle body of the first road vehicle and at a second end to a vehicle axle of the first road vehicle. The bladder is fixed at a first end to the first end of the shock absorber and at a second end to the second end of the shock absorber.
