  • Patent number: 5967549
Abstract: A vehicle occupant restraint device control system for use in a vehicle to selectively control the operation of safety devices such as one or more airbags includes a seat position sensor device which detects the position of a seat relative to a selected component of the vehicle, and a controller which receives signals from the seat position sensor device. A controller device processes the signals from the seat position sensor device and determines whether to activate, deactivate or modify the deployment of one or more vehicle occupant restraint devices, such as airbags or seat belt pretensioners, depending upon the position of the vehicle seat relative to a selected component of the vehicle structure, such as the steering wheel or instrument panel.

  • Patent number: 5924723
Abstract: A side safety barrier device to protect occupants of a vehicle includes a crash sensor to generate at least one actuator signal when a crash having predetermined properties is sensed. A safety barrier is normally stored in the headliner of the vehicle in a first or stored position and selectively deployable to a second or deployed position by the safety barrier deployment assembly when signaled by the crash sensor to separate or isolate the side of the vehicle on which the side safety device is disposed from the interior of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 5893582
Abstract: An airbag deployment control system for use in a vehicle to selectively control the deployment of airbag(s) in a driver side and/or passenger side airbag protection system comprising a switch or sensor assembly to detect the position of the driver seat and/or passenger seat within the front seat compartment of the vehicle and a control means to receive signals from the switch or sensor assembly and to activate, deactivate or modify the deployment of the airbag(s) depending upon the position of the driver seat and/or front passenger seat relative to the dashboard of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 5865463
Abstract: An airbag deployment controller has a plurality of sensors interposed between a rigid member and a seat pan member such that the weight supported by a portion of the seat cushion which the rigid member underlies is transferred from the rigid member to the seat pan via said sensors. The sensors sense the magnitude of the force transferred therethrough. A device processes signals from the sensors to determine the weight that the portion of the seat cushion which the rigid member underlies is bearing. The signal processing device controls the activation and operation of an airbag as a function of the presence and weight of a seat occupant. Optionally, the tension on a seat belt may also be sensed and processed as a parameter for controlling the deployment of an airbag.

  • Patent number: 5695242
Abstract: A seat structure has a device which acts to reduce the interaction between the lower extremities of a vehicle occupant and the vehicle interior. The seat structure also reduces the interaction between the vehicle occupant's legs and the instrument panel by limiting the forward travel of the lower torso. The seat structure may employ an airbag, a mechanical device or a pyrotechnic device, which elevates only the front part of the seat cushion to remove the leg and foot from the path of the intruding or reactive structure, and to minimize the travel of the lower torso into the instrument panel. A crash sensor activates the device when the crash sensor senses a crash of a selected severity.
