Patent number: 7552945Abstract: A steering column is structured such that a clamp/unclamp mechanism of a telescopic mechanism and a tilting mechanism can be operated by a single control lever located in the vicinity of a steering wheel, and that no part juts out of the steering column to improve reliability and controllability. When the control lever is pulled to rock on the center of the lever center axis, a tilt head is unclamped, while the rocking motion of the control lever turns a pusher plate, thereby pushing a pusher rod and also turning a column clamp shaft through a rocking arm. With the rotation of the column clamp shaft, the clamp is released to allow a column head to move. Since the column clamp shaft turns parallelly with the direction of movement of the column head, the column head can be clamped/unclamped regardless of its position.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 2005Date of Patent: June 30, 2009Assignee: NSK Ltd.Inventors: Kenji Sato, Sakae Matsumoto

Publication number: 20020157494Abstract: A concave groove 3 formed in a male spline fitting portion 1a of an inner shaft 1 is filled with a synthetic resin via filling holes 4 formed in a female spline fitting portion 2a of an outer shaft 2. Resinous slide portions 5 are formed on the fitting portions 1a, 2a of these two shafts 1, 2. A resinous ring 6 is attached to an inner peripheral surface of a front side end of the female spline fitting portion 2a of the outer shaft 2, whereby even if the front side end of the outer shaft 2 comes off the male spline fitting portion 1a of the inner shaft 1, the front side end of the outer shaft 2, because of the resinous ring 6 sliding on an outer peripheral surface of a small-diameter portion 1b of the inner shaft 1, is capable of smoothly moving towards a front side of a vehicle.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 14, 2001Publication date: October 31, 2002Inventors: Sakae Matsumoto, Tadashi Hibino, Takeshi Negishi, Satoshi Onozato

Patent number: 5915726Abstract: A tilt type steering apparatus utilizes unique design features to reduce the occurrence of noise during tilt adjustment of a steering column and to ensure reliable engagement between first and second sets of teeth that mesh to lock the tilt position of the steering column. To reduce the occurrence of noise, for example, a compression coil spring that supports the weight of a portion pivotally movable with a rear steering column is mounted such that the center axes of its fore and rear end portions are non-coincident over a whole range of the pivotal movement. To ensure reliable engagement of the first and second sets of teeth, a fixable restraining member having the second set of teeth is mounted for adjusting an angle of the pitch line of the second set of teeth with respect to the pitch line of the first set of teeth.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1998Date of Patent: June 29, 1999Assignee: NSK Ltd.Inventors: Tadashi Hibino, Sakae Matsumoto
