Publication number: 20240100554Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems and techniques for controlling irrigation systems using thermoelectric devices. A thermoelectric generator can produce a voltage that is proportional to a temperature differential measured locally, adjacent an irrigation target or sprinkler. The voltage can be used to control the irrigation sprinkler, for example, by providing a signal to a control valve that is fluidly coupled with the sprinkler. The system can be self-contained, without external electrical connections and without solar panels, allowing for remote use that is not dependent upon solar irradiance. The system can further be tuned to individually control irrigation components, such as by calibrating the voltage to soil moisture or other conditions, and actuating the valve when the voltage reaches a threshold indicative of the condition.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 2, 2023Publication date: March 28, 2024Inventors: Salman Mohagheghi, Jamison Alan Olsten

Patent number: 10310495Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for monitoring operation of an automation system that includes a plurality of interconnected logical objects. The systems and methods may build a fuzzy cognitive map to model an interdependence of the plurality of interconnected logical objects upon one another. In some examples, the systems and methods may identify a non-ideality associated with at least one of the plurality of logical objects and determine from the fuzzy cognitive map an effect of the non-ideality on the operation of the automation system. In some examples, the systems and methods may determine from the fuzzy cognitive map a first one of the plurality of logical objects that affects a second one of the plurality of logical objects to a greater extent than do the remaining ones of the plurality of logical objects.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2011Date of Patent: June 4, 2019Assignee: ABB Research Ltd.Inventors: Salman Mohagheghi, Jean-Charles Tournier

Patent number: 10298013Abstract: Systems and methods for integrating demand response with service restoration in an electric distribution system. The electric distribution system may include a plurality of regions, zones, and/or areas including at least an outage area that includes a fault and is not receiving electric current from the electric distribution system and a restoration area that is receiving electric current from the electric distribution system and that may be selectively configured to provide electric current to a selected portion of the outage area. The electric distribution system also includes a plurality of demand responsive loads configured to be selectively isolated from the electric distribution system responsive to a load shed signal. The demand responsive loads may be selectively utilized during service restoration, such as to provide additional excess capacity within the restoration area and/or decrease a magnitude of the electric load applied by the selected portion of the outage area.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 2012Date of Patent: May 21, 2019Assignee: ABB Research Ltd.Inventors: Fang Yang, Salman Mohagheghi, Zhao Li

Patent number: 9698616Abstract: Systems and methods for restoring service within electrical power systems are disclosed. The methods may include identifying a restoration path for an outage area within a power system, selecting a mobile energy resource connection site that is electrically connected to the restoration path and/or the outage area, sending power injection requests to a plurality of mobile energy resources, at least some of which may be proximate the connection site, receiving power injection acceptances from participating ones of the plurality of mobile energy resources, and implementing the restoration path. The systems may include a processor and a computer readable storage medium having a plurality of machine-readable instructions embodied thereon and configured for execution by the processor to carry out the method.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 2012Date of Patent: July 4, 2017Assignee: ABB Research Ltd.Inventors: Salman Mohagheghi, James Stoupis

Patent number: 9577435Abstract: In one aspect of the teachings herein, demand responsive loads are selected for involvement in a given DR event using an advantageous approach to selection that is based on using a mathematical network model to evaluate power loss in a power distribution network as a function of different combinations of demand responsive load selections and corresponding load reduction values. The mathematical network model comprises a mathematical representation of the power distribution network as a multi-phase unbalanced distribution network, including mathematical representations of the physical components in the power distribution network and the connecting relationships of those components.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2014Date of Patent: February 21, 2017Assignee: ABB Research Ltd.Inventors: Fang Yang, Salman Mohagheghi

Patent number: 9171256Abstract: Systems and methods for predicting customer compliance with requests to participate in demand response events are disclosed. The systems and methods may include receiving demand response information for a demand response event, receiving information for a customer, and determining or adjusting for the customer a compliance probability for the demand response event based at least partially on the demand response information and the received customer information.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 2011Date of Patent: October 27, 2015Assignee: ABA Research Ltd.Inventors: Salman Mohagheghi, Jean-Charles Tournier
