  • Patent number: 8433516
Abstract: An instrumentation system for assessing operation of a reciprocating pump system which produces hydrocarbons from a non-vertical or a vertical wellbore. The instrumentation system periodically produces a downhole pump card as a function of a directly or indirectly measured surface card and a friction law function from a wave equation which describes the linear vibrations in a long slender rod. A control signal or command signal is generated based on characteristics of the downhole pump card for controlling the pumping system. It also generates a pump and well analysis report that is useful for a pump operation and determination of its condition.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 1, 2011
Date of Patent: April 30, 2013
    Assignee: Lufkin Industries, Inc.
Inventors: Sam G. Gibbs, Doneil M. Dorado, Kenneth B. Nolen, Eric S. Oestreich, Jeffrey J. Dacunha

  • Patent number: 7212923
Abstract: A method for inferring production of a rod pumped well. Inferred production is estimated in a well manager which not only performs pump-off control with a down-hole pump card, but also estimates liquid (oil-water) and gas production using the subsurface pump as a meter. Methods are incorporated in the well manager for identifying and quantifying several conditions: pump leakage, unanchored tubing, free gas and oil shrinkage. Quantifying such conditions in the well manger enables accurate inferring of production thereby eliminating the need for traditional well tests.

  • Patent number: 5252031
Abstract: A method for monitoring a rod pumped well to detect various problems, i.e., fluid pound, rod parts, pump problems, high fluid levels, imbalance of the pumping unit, rate of production and others. The method utilizes measurements made at the surface to calculate a downhole pump card. The method utilizes the downhole pump card to detect the various pump problems and control the pumping unit.

  • Patent number: 4490094
Abstract: Instantaneous speeds of revolution for a beam pumping unit prime mover rotor, determined for all or a predetermined part of the pumping unit reciprocation cycle, are applied to compute one or more parameters of pumping unit performance, which are compared to predetermined values for such parameters to detect the existance of cause (such as pump-off, mechanical malfunction, electrical operating inefficiency or pumping unit imbalance) for correction of pumping unit operation, which is done if indicated by the comparison.

  • Patent number: 3951209
Abstract: A method for monitoring a rod pumped well and determining when the well has pumped off. The method uses a dynamometer to monitor the power input to the rod string and senses when the power input decreases to determine when the well pumps-off.
