  • Patent number: 10320370
Abstract: Methods and circuits for analyzing a signal and adjusting parameters of an equalizer for a signal. The signal is received at a receiver over a channel wherein the signal has a wave form. The signal is equalized at an equalizer using an adjustable parameter for the equalization. Data points from the signal are sampled between upper and lower limits of a threshold at an error sampler. A performance metric of the signal is computed based on a statistical density of the data points from the signal between the upper and lower limits of the threshold.

  • Patent number: 7315571
Abstract: A transceiver for communicating a multi-tone modulated communication channel on a subscriber line. The transceiver includes: a digital signal processor (DSP) with a Fourier transform module and an analog front end (AFE). The DSP determines an available range of frequencies on the subscriber line and expands or contracts the tone spacing of each of a fixed number ā€œNā€ of tones accordingly by decreasing or increasing the processing interval associated with the Fourier transform of each tone set. The AFE performs digital-to-analog conversion of the multi-tone modulated communication channel at rates compatible with the processing interval of the Fourier transform module; whereby the range of frequencies spanned by the modulated tones on the subscriber line conforms to the available of frequencies on the subscriber line.

  • Patent number: 7035326
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for demodulating data received over a communication medium carrying a transmission having multiple pilot tones with pilot data modulated thereon and message tones with message data modulated thereon and with the pilot tones and message tones frequency division multiplexed with respect to one another. In an embodiment of the invention the communication protocol utilized for modulation and demodulation is discrete multi tone (DMT). The invention allows message processing and equalizer training to proceed in parallel before equalizer training tables have been completed thus reducing the time associated with modem initialization. The apparatus in one embodiment of the invention includes on the receive path of a DMT or other multi-tone modem, a fast Fourier transform engine (FFT), a message processor, and a decoder. The FFT converts the received data from a time domain to a frequency domain.

  • Patent number: 5745480
Abstract: A multi-rate wireless communications system that supports a plurality of distributed user terminals in full-duplex simultaneous communications with a central base station, where each user terminal is provided on demand with one of multiple bit rates at a negotiated QOS is provided. Each user is assigned a variable bit rate, a variable processing gain, a variable transmit power and a unique fixed rate spreading code, resulting in a constant bandwidth signal received at a relative power level corresponding to the negotiated QOS. This application can be applied to systems including wireless local loop and mobile cellular. By adjusting signal energy and interference energy, variable bit rates and negotiated QOS parameters can be supported.

  • Patent number: 5553076
Abstract: A protocol for wireless local area network communication between a base stationary unit and a plurality of wireless terminals is disclosed. The main features of this protocol is based upon channel reservation requests by active wireless terminals. Contention is resolved and authorization is granted with data message signals transmitted by the authorized wireless terminal either immediately for asynchronous service or periodically for a time-based service. The system further provides for the base stationary unit to query the receipt of the data message signal by the wireless terminal authorized to receive the transmission. If no response signal is received, then the base stationary unit would authorize for itself transmission of the data message to relay it, either "over the air" or via wired connection to another base stationary unit in another data cell.

  • Patent number: 5479453
Abstract: A digital receiver for receiving an RF signal has a conventional RF to intermediate frequency (IF) converter. The IF signal, however, is amplified with a limit on its amplitude. In addition, a Receive Signal Strength Intensity (RSSI) signal is generated. The RSSI signal contains the envelope information of the modulated IF signal. The IF amplitude limited signal containing phase information, is then digitized and a complex baseband signal is produced. The complex baseband signal is then combined with the RSSI signal to restore the amplitude information of the modulated IF signal in the complex baseband signal. The restored complex baseband signal can be equalized with a conventional equalizer to remove intersymbol interference. A conventional symbol detector detects the symbol in this signal stream.

  • Patent number: 5398258
Abstract: In the present invention a wireless communication system is disclosed. A base unit communicates with a remote unit. The system comprises means for transmitting, using CDMA, between the base unit and the remote unit, in one of a plurality of frequencies channels selected. In one period of time, the base unit transmits and in another period of time, different from the one period, the remote unit transmits. Further, the system comprises means for changing the one frequency channel selected to another frequency channel, different from the one frequency channel, in response to interference in the one frequency channel. Thus, communication between the base unit and the remote unit is then affected over the another frequency channel.

  • Patent number: 5278992
Abstract: In the present invention, the power of a remote transmitted signal is controlled, by a remote communication device. The remote communication device is in communication with the base communication device. The base communication device transmits to the remote device a base transmitted signal. The base transmitted signal is received by the remote device and its power is measured. The transmission power of the remote transmitted signal is controlled in accordance withPower=A+(B-C)where A is representative of the desired power of the remote transmitted signal received by the base device; B is representative of the power of the base transmitted signal, transmitted by the base device; and C is representative of the measured power of the base transmitted signal as received by the remote device.

  • Patent number: 5247702
Abstract: A method of establishing a wireless communication link between a base unit and a remote unit is disclosed. The base unit transmits periodically a sync signal in a first selected time period in a selected frequency channel. The remote unit scans for the clock signal. The remote unit transmits a first response signal encoded by a first code in the selected frequency channel in response to the detection of the clock signal. The first response signal is transmitted in a second selected time period, different from the first selected time period. The base unit transmits a first control signal which is encoded by said first code, in the selected frequency channel, in a third selected time period, which is different from the first and second selected time periods. The first control signal contains a second code to be used in the communication session between the base unit and the remote unit. The remote unit receives the first control signal in the third time period. The remote unit decodes the first control signal.
