  • Patent number: 6879566
Abstract: A wireless telecommunications system comprises a radio network layer for carrying mobile-specific signaling, and a transport layer for establishing user channels between system nodes over a transport network. The transport network is visible to the radio network layer only via a primitive interface through which it can request transport services. The invisibility of the transport network to the radio network layer makes the radio network layer independent of the underlying transport network and enables the use of different transport network technologies. The radio network layer signaling procedures and connections are mapped with the underlying transport layer signaling procedures and connections by using binding information at one end of the connection leg, which is exchanged between the network and transport layers through a primitive interface, and used to “identify” the radio network layer and the transport layer connection setup signaling carried out between the nodes.

  • Publication number: 20050009501
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method, a system and a network node for providing security in a radio access network, wherein an information conveyed in a signalling message of an application protocol of said radio access network is used to derive or create a security association to be used between communicating network nodes of said radio access network. The conveyed information may be an IP address or a UDP datagram used for deriving the security association from a respective database. Alternatively, the conveyed information may be a security parameter index or a security association information conveyed in a new information element of the signalling message. This information is then used for creating a new Security Association between the communicating network nodes. Thereby, a separate connection or protocol is not required for the security procedures.

  • Publication number: 20040213297
Abstract: The area of the invention belongs to the transport technologies in UTRAN. This invention concerns a method for multiplexing a data stream onto a transport bearer between an originating network node and a receiving network node in a telecommunications network. This is done in order to ensure the effective usage of transport resources over the two interfaces, i.e. Iub/Iur. To accomplish this the RNC and/or Node B/RNC should check if the there already exists a transport bearer, which can be utilised for HS-DSCH transport over Iub/Iur interface. Because of this a transport bearer identification code or transport bearer id is needed to identify this bearer between RNC and Node B/RNC.

  • Publication number: 20040136403
Abstract: The fundamental idea in the invention is as follows. Instead of setting up and releasing a bearer, e.g. an AAL2 connection, the connection is maintained and only modified to have either a zero bandwidth or the required bandwidth. The zero bandwidth corresponds to a release in the conventional case and the required bandwidth corresponds to the setup of the connection. The invention is especially applicable in the cases where it is reasonable to assume that a connection once established and currently/no longer needed, that usually can be an AAL2 connection, will be needed again after a reasonably short period of time. However, the invention is applicable also in the general case where the AAL2 connections are initially set up with zero or small resources and then modified afterwards to an appropriate bandwidth on demand.

  • Publication number: 20040120357
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and system for controlling header compression in a packet data network, e.g. an IP based cellular network. Load information of the packet data network is obtained, and header compression is triggered in response to the result of an evaluation of the load information. In particular, the header compression can be applied only for one direction, provided that the load information indicates asymmetry. Thereby, the headers can be compressed only on demand and only in the direction where the traffic volume is higher and where, in effect, the transmission capacity is the bottleneck. As a result, header compression takes less processing power and thus allows more flows to be compressed.

  • Publication number: 20040082353
Abstract: A telecommunication arrangement for transporting power control information, comprising a base station, a radio network controller for controlling the base station, and where information between the base station and the radio network controller is transmitted on transport channels carried by transport bearers, each having a one-to-one relationship to a transport channel, a user equipment communicating with the base station, the base station comprises means for mapping data received from the user equipment onto transport channels. The mapping means is configured to map power control information from a transport channel onto a different transport bearer than the bearer with which the transport channel has the one-to-one relationship.

  • Publication number: 20040037318
Abstract: When an SCCP protocol according to the SS7 signalling system is used in the network layer and some other protocol than a protocol according to the SS7 signalling system is used in the lower layer, an address according to the second system is set as a proper address in the address field of the addressing according to the SCCP protocol, the address is marked as a global title address of the SCCP protocol, and the proper address is transmitted from the first layer to the second layer. In this way the lower layer receives an address it can use for routing and there is no need to change the addressing of the SCCP protocol.

  • Patent number: 6631125
Abstract: Methods and systems for setting-up channels in third generation (3G) communication systems that utilize wideband, code division multiple access signaling protocols including the reserving of a branch of the channelisation code tree to set-up the channels. By reserving a branch of the tree, the channels can be automatically coded using the pre-reserved codes in the branch which eliminates the need for separate verification procedure to be performed to determine whether there are enough transport layer resources available to accommodate the new channel and whether the new channel will disturb or otherwise interfere with current channel data transport. Since the new channels are set-up using reserved codes, the transport layer resources already exist to accommodate the new channels and there can be no chance of existing channel interference.

  • Publication number: 20030161325
Abstract: The present invention relates to transportation of information between nodes of a communication system. Information is transmitted by first transport entities from a first node to a second node and by second transport entities from the second node. Allowed transportation delays are defined for the first transport entities, and the first transport entities are distributed into transportation classes based on the allowed transportation delays. An indicator is assigned for a transport entity that is to be transported from the first node based on the transportation class thereof and also on information of a transport entity that is to be transported from the second node at a given moment of time. After the transport has been received at the second node information contained therein is inserted into a second transport entity, the selection thereof being based on the indicator.

  • Publication number: 20030099255
Abstract: A channel inverse multiplexer/multiplexer (IMUX/MUX) (14a) of a MAC sublayer (14) of a UTRAN RNC (11) for providing to a UE (18) traffic (communication signals including in general both control and user data) at a higher rate than the UE can accept over a single channel. The channel IMUX/MUX performs inverse multiplexing of traffic for downlink, and multiplexing of traffic on uplink, and does so in a way that is transparent to all other layers/entities of the UTRAN (11-17) and to the UE (18).

  • Publication number: 20020040294
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for boosting data transmission in a telecommunications system and a mobile communications system. The invention is characterised in that the telecommunications network uses at least on a part of the transmission path between the fixed station, e.g. a base transceiver station, and the transcoder unit speech coding at a lower transmission rate than the transmission rate of the speech coding used on the transmission path between the fixed station and the terminal equipment. The speech parameters received from the terminal equipment are converted for the speech coding method used on the transmission connection between the fixed station and the transcoder unit and vice versa. In the network transcoder unit it is possible to reconvert speech parameters received from the direction of the terminal equipment e.g. into speech parameters of the speech coding used on the transmission path between the terminal equipment and the fixed station.
