  • Patent number: 5416126
Abstract: A composition which is cured upon exposure to ultraviolet light in the absence of solvent is disclosed. The liquid composition is prepared by combining a liquid maleate polyester and at least one of a vinyl compound and an allyl functional compound. A photoinitiator is then added to the polymerizable liquid composition. A substrate is impregnated with the polymerizable liquid composition and exposed to actinic energy of a sufficient dosage for a sufficient amount of time to polymerize the composition to a sufficient degree to impart useful properties to the substrate. The composition can be used as a binder for fiberglass insulation, in the manufacture of transparent or semi-transparent paper and to manufacture paper for use in photocopy machines.

  • Patent number: 4956198
Abstract: Substantially hydroxy free, liquid, ultraviolet-curable compositions comprise cationically polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated material including a vinyl ether-terminated polyurethane which is the reaction product of isocyanate-reactive material including a monohydric vinyl ether and a diisocyanate having the formula: ##STR1## in which R is an alkylene group containing from 1-10 carbon atoms, this polyurethane having a number average molecular weight in the range of from 2000 to 6000, and a curing effective amount of a cationic photoinitiator which initiates a cationic cure when exposed to ultraviolet light, but less than 1% thereof based on the weight of the unsaturated material subjected to polymerization. These coatings are applied with a thickness of from 1 to 10 mils and cured with ultraviolet light, and they are particularly adapted to provide primary and single coatings for optical glass fiber.

  • Patent number: 4889901
Abstract: A light-curable ethylenically unsaturated liquid coating composition which cures to provide low modulus coatings adapted for the primary or single coat coating of optical glass fiber and having improved adhesion is disclosed. This composition comprises:(1) an acrylate-terminated polyurethane oligomer;(2) a monoethylenically unsaturated liquid having a glass transition temperature, measured on a homopolymer thereof, below about 0.degree. C. and which reduces the glass transition temperature of the coating; and(3) a silsesquioxane oligomer polyacrylate which is the condensation reaction product of about two moles of hydroxyalkyl acrylate in which the alkyl group contains from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, with about one mole of a silsesquioxane polysilanol, the proportion of the silsesquioxane oligomer polyacrylate is in the range of from about 2% to about 60% of the weight of the coating composition.
