  • Patent number: 8324247
Abstract: Pulmonary arterial hypertension in a mammal can be prevented or treated using combined 5-HT2A and 5-HT2B receptor antagonist. The antagonists can be present in a single compound or in two separate compounds.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 13, 2009
Date of Patent: December 4, 2012
    Assignee: Ventrus Biosciences, Inc.
    Inventor: Moh. Samir Amer
  • Publication number: 20120046318
Abstract: The present invention relates to compositions and methods for treatment of internal and/or external hemorrhoids, wherein the treatment includes topically administering to a subject a composition comprising from 0.3% to 0.7% of S-2?-[2-(1-methyl-2-piperidyl)ethyl]cinnamanilide, wherein the S-2?-[2-(1-methyl-2-piperidyl)ethyl]cinnamanilide not only treats the hemorrhoidal symptoms but delays or inhibits the recurrence of hemorrhoids and/or symptoms thereof.

  • Patent number: 5780487
Abstract: The 5HT.sub.2 receptor antagonizing effect of 2'-?2-(1-methyl-2-piperidyl) ethyl! cinnamanilide, a racemic mixture (R S-MPEC) of S-MPEC and R-MPEC isomers is found to be provided practically entirely by the S-MPEC isomer, the R-MPEC being effectively an impurity. Disclosed are pure S-MPEC, mixtures thereof with up to about 10% of R-MPEC, a novel method of resolving the S-MPEC involving a novel intermediate compound, therapeutic compositions containing S-MPEC, and uses thereof for administration to animals, especially humans, in need of 5HT.sub.2 receptor blockage, as for hemorrhoids, varicose veins, venous and coronary insufficiencies, wound healing, and as analgesic or local anesthetic agents.

  • Patent number: 5522262
Abstract: A disposable specific gravity tester of liquids such as urine comprising a form-maintaining, flexible or resilient, transparent plastic pipet-type tube, one end of which is integrally closed to form a self-contained bulb, the other normally open end of which is fixedly closed with a solid liquid-permeable plug permitting inward passage there through of the liquid to be tested, and at least one floatable solid testing body in the tube with a predetermined specific gravity at or approximating the expected or normal specific gravity of the liquid; and its method of use, comprising squeezing the bulb while the other plugged end is below the surface of the liquid, releasing the squeezing force to suck up into the tube sufficient liquid to float the testing body or bodies, and observing if and/or which body or bodies sink, float or remain suspended in the liquid.

  • Patent number: 5266571
Abstract: This invention relates to a method for treating or preventing hemorrhoids, comprising administering to a susceptible animal a 5-hydroxytryptamine.sub.2 (5-HT.sub.2) receptor antagonist at an anti-hemorrhoidally effective therapeutic dose.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 5248669
Abstract: This invention relates to a method for inhibiting or suppressing in an animal the contraction of vessels lined with endothelial tissue, which contractions are caused by anoxia or hypoxia. The method comprises administering to such an animal an effective therapeutic (contraction-inhibiting) amount of an avermectin class antibiotic such as ivermectin or a derivative thereof for a time period sufficient to inhibit or suppress said contractions.

  • Patent number: 5013552
Abstract: Loaded pollen grains are disclosed which are suitable for use as delivery systems for introducing biologically active substances into or on plants and animals. Such pollen grains are suitable to deliver both small and large (macromolecules) molecules. Preferred pollen grains are those that have been defatted and then pre-treated to be free of antigenic materials and that have special surface features that facilitate their attachment to tissue surfaces, particularly to mucous membranes. The most preferred pollen grains are those that have spiny or irregular or fragmented surfaces. Also disclosed are a method of pre-treating the pollen grains to remove antigenic materials; a method of loading the pollen grains with the biologically active material; and a method of incorporating such pre-treated, loaded pollen grains into formulations or dosage forms suitable for introduction into or on a plant or animal body.
