  • Patent number: 9678046
Abstract: A system and method for thermal gradient gas chromatography wherein a front or injection end of a column is heated to a higher temperature than a back or detector end to thereby create a thermal gradient having a profile that is substantially monotonically non-increasing and has a positive second derivative, and then providing a heat source to raise the thermal gradient and cause it to remain stationary or to travel through the column while maintaining a desired profile.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 16, 2014
Date of Patent: June 13, 2017
    Assignee: BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY
Inventors: H. Dennis Tolley, Anzi Wang, Samuel E. Tolley, Milton L. Lee, Aaron R. Hawkins
  • Patent number: 9053919
Abstract: A scaled down version of a toroidal radio frequency (RF) ion trap mass analyzer operating with RF trapping voltages on the order of 1 kVp-p yet despite the reduced dimensions, retains roughly the same ion trapping volume as conventional 3D quadrupole ion traps, wherein the curved geometry enables construction of a compact mass analyzer and easy interface with conventional electron multipliers.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 13, 2006
Date of Patent: June 9, 2015
    Assignee: BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY
Inventors: Stephen A. Lammert, Samuel E. Tolley, Jeffrey L. Jones, Randall W. Waite, Edgar D. Lee, Milton L. Lee

  • Patent number: 7723679
Abstract: A coaxial hybrid ion trap that uses two substantially planar opposing plates to generate electrical focusing fields that simultaneously generate at least two different types or shapes of trapping regions, wherein a first trapping region is a quadrupole trapping region disposed coaxially with respect to the opposing plates, and wherein a second trapping region is a toroidal ion trap having a toroidal trapping region that is simultaneously created around the quadrupole trapping region.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 25, 2008
Date of Patent: May 25, 2010
    Assignee: Brigham Young University

  • Patent number: 7075070
Abstract: A single set of electrodes, wherein different electrical potentials are applied to the single set of electrodes at different times in order to perform both ion mobility-based spectrometry and mass spectrometry (MS) on a sample of ions, wherein the ions are processed by performing ion mobility-based spectrometry and mass spectrometry in any sequence, any number of times, and as isolated or superposed procedures in order to trap, separate, fragment, and/or analyze charged particles and charged particles derived from atoms, molecules, particles, sub-atomic particles and ions.
