Publication number: 20250153248Abstract: A cutting tool has a tool body with a proximal end for mounting to drive unit and a distal end for engaging a workpiece for cutting. The tool body extends longitudinally along a central axis of the tool body. The tool body defines an interior space therein. One or more additively manufactured passive dampers are disposed in the interior space of the tool body.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 14, 2023Publication date: May 15, 2025Inventors: Dominik Schmid, Johannes Ellinger, Thomas Mair, Edward Rusnica, Samuel Eichelberger, Werner Hernandez

Publication number: 20250128333Abstract: A tool holder for cooling a cutting insert is disclosed. The tool holder may include a tool holder body, a cutting insert mounted on the tool holder body, and a through coolant clamp mounted to the tool holder body that secures the cutting insert to the tool holder body and provides coolant fluid to the cutting insert. The through coolant clamp may include a base portion with a fluid chamber extending radially outward from a clamp screw hole. A nose portion extends radially outward from the base portion, and at least one nozzle is provided within the nose portion extending along a nozzle axis. The nozzle includes a nozzle inlet and a nozzle outlet with a nozzle surface therebetween. The through coolant clamp may further include a transition outer surface in fluid communication with the fluid chamber and the nozzle inlet. The transition outer surface forms a smooth transition between the fluid chamber and the coolant channel inlet that provides controlled flow of the coolant through the coolant clamp.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 20, 2023Publication date: April 24, 2025Inventors: Samuel Eichelberger, Igor Kaufmann, Dominik Schmid

Patent number: 12202050Abstract: A turning toolholder includes a shank, a club head, and a clamp and a clamp screw for clamping a cutting insert. The club head includes a clamp coolant supply hole in fluid communication, a flank coolant supply hole and an auxiliary rake coolant supply hole, all in fluid communication with the main coolant supply hole. Coolant is supplied through a rake coolant exit opening formed in the forward nose portion of the clamp to direct coolant to the top rake surface of the cutting insert, and coolant is supplied through a flank coolant exit opening located below the insert-receiving pocket to provide coolant to the side flank surfaces of the cutting insert. In addition, an auxiliary rake coolant supply housing formed on a top surface of the club head supplies additional coolant to the top rake surface of the cutting insert during high heat applications.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 2021Date of Patent: January 21, 2025Assignee: KENNAMETAL INC.Inventors: Samuel Eichelberger, Igor Kaufmann, Dominik Schmid

Patent number: 12138693Abstract: A clamping tool holder includes a tool holder body and a clamp for clamping a cutting insert. The clamp causes the cutting insert to press against the bottom and the side walls of an insert-receiving pocket of the tool holder body. The tool holder body has an inclined surface sloping inward in a direction away from the insert-receiving pocket. The clamp has an inclined surface that acts as a ramp with the inclined surface of the tool holder body. When a clamp screw is tightened, a nub of the clamp engages an inside rearward surface of a mounting bore of the insert with face contact and a contact pad engages a top surface of the cutting insert. As a result, the clamp exerts a force downward and rearward force on the insert. In one aspect, the nub has a polygonal cross-sectional shape.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2021Date of Patent: November 12, 2024Assignee: KENNAMETAL INC.Inventor: Samuel Eichelberger

Patent number: 10254104Abstract: A method and apparatus for center height alignment of a boring bar is disclosed. The apparatus includes a seat member with a bottom and a back, and a digital angle gauge mounted to the seat member. The method includes the steps of: assembling an apparatus comprising a seat member and a digital angle gauge; calibrating the apparatus such that a Display of the digital angle gauge reads zero degrees; and aligning the center height of the boring bar by rotating the boring bar such that the Display of the digital angle gauge reads zero degrees when the apparatus is mounted onto the boring bar.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2015Date of Patent: April 9, 2019Assignee: KENNAMETAL INCInventors: Samuel Eichelberger, Shi Chen, Caleb Fisher, Norm Dimatteo

Patent number: 9993879Abstract: A cutting tool includes a cutting insert mounted to a head attached to a collar at a first end of the cutting tool. A shank is located at a second, opposite end of the cutting tool. A central cavity extends inwardly from the first end toward the shank. An eddy current vibration absorber assembly is disposed within the central cavity. The eddy current vibration absorber assembly includes an absorber mass made of an electrically conductive material, a magnetic material proximate the absorber mass, and a support member for supporting the absorber mass within the central cavity. The eddy current vibration absorber assembly is tuned by selectively adjusting a distance between the absorber mass and the magnetic material.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 2016Date of Patent: June 12, 2018Assignee: KENNAMETAL INCInventors: Samuel Eichelberger, Tony Schmitz, Shi Chen, Igor Kaufmann
