    Abstract: A heat-transfer label that is well-suited for use on untreated polyethylene, particularly untreated high-density polyethylene and untreated low-density polyethylene. In one embodiment, the label includes a support portion, the support portion comprising a paper carrier web. The label also includes a wax release layer overcoating the paper carrier web. The label further comprises a transfer portion printed on top of the wax release layer, the transfer portion including a protective lacquer layer, an ink layer and an adhesive layer. The protective lacquer layer is printed onto the wax release layer and comprises a polyester resin, castor oil and a chlorinated polypropylene capable of immobilizing the ink layer relative to the protective lacquer. The ink layer, which comprises an acrylic ink, is printed onto the protective lacquer layer. The adhesive layer is printed over the ink layer and comprises a polyamide resin, an ethylene vinyl acetate resin, erucamide and a chlorinated polyethylene resin.

The transfer portion includes an organic solvent-soluble phenoxy protective lacquer layer, an organic solvent-soluble polyester ink layer over the protective lacquer layer, and a water-dispersible acrylic adhesive layer over the ink layer.

According to one embodiment, the label includes a sheet of paper overcoated with a release layer of polyethylene. A skim coat of wax is overcoated onto the polyethylene-coated paper. A protective lacquer layer comprising a polyester, polyester/vinyl or polyester/vinyl with wax lacquer is printed onto the skim coat. An ink design layer comprising one or more polyester inks is printed onto the protective lacquer layer. An adhesive layer comprising a polyester, polyester/vinyl or polyester/vinyl with wax adhesive is printed onto the ink design layer.

The label further comprises a transfer portion printed on top of the skim coat, the transfer portion including a protective lacquer layer, an ink layer and an adhesive layer. The protective lacquer layer is printed onto the skim coat and comprises nitrocellulose, a release agent, a low molecular weight methyl/n-butyl methacrylate copolymer and a medium molecular weight methyl methacrylate copolymer. The ink layer, which comprises one or more polyamide inks and/or acrylic inks, is printed onto the protective lacquer layer.

    Abstract: A heat-transfer label that is particularly well-suited for decorating treated low-density polyethylene (LDPE) containers and that exhibits strong resistance to degradation from animal fats and the like, even when subjected to flexing. In a preferred embodiment, the label includes a support, a wax release layer over the support and a transfer portion over the wax release layer. The transfer portion includes a protective lacquer layer, the protective lacquer layer comprising a pair of cross-linked polyester resins and a cross-linked vinyl resin, each of said cross-linked resins being cross-linked by a hexamethoxymethylmelamine resin. The transfer portion also includes an ink layer over the protective lacquer layer, the ink layer comprising a polyamide ink. The transfer portion further includes an adhesive layer over the ink layer, the adhesive layer comprising nitrocellulose and a soft polyamide resin.

The transfer portion includes an organic solvent-soluble phenoxy protective lacquer layer, an organic solvent-soluble polyester ink layer over the protective lacquer layer, and an acrylic adhesive layer over the ink layer. The adhesive layer is formed by depositing onto the ink layer, e.g., by gravure printing, a composition comprising a water-based acrylic resin dispersion or emulsion, isopropyl alcohol and water, and then evaporating the volatile components of the composition to leave an acrylic film.
