  • Patent number: 4284449
Abstract: A method for producing a device for sampling optical power carried along a transmission medium.Capillary tubing, cut to a fixed length, is machined to uniform outer diameter. Its ends are machined to a smaller diameter to accommodate end caps. The outer cylindrical surface is polished, and a length of optical fiber is inserted thereinto. The space between fiber and capillary is filled with transparent cement.Caps are cemented to the tubing ends. Protective sleeving is slipped over the optical fibers, the sleeving being inserted within orifices in the caps and cemented thereto. Shrink tubing, covering the end caps and protective sleeving, is heated. The tubing, with fiber, is cut at an angle into two sections. Both cut faces are ground and polished.

  • Patent number: 4239333
Abstract: One optical fiber is coupled to another by apparatus which includes a connector plug for each fiber, with the fibers supported within their respective plug. The plugs each have a main cylindrical surface, and a shoulder with a non-cylindrical configuration. Two sleeves are provided, each having a longitudinal eccentric hole therethrough large enough so that the main cylindrical surface of the respective plug can rotatably fit therethrough.A first means supports one sleeve for rotational movement about a first axis, while a second means supports the other sleeve for rotational movement about a second axis. The two axes are parallel to, but not colinear with, each other. Two female means are provided, associated with their respective support means, for receiving the respective shoulders and for preventing significant rotation of their respective connector plug. The two support means can include a common V-block, and a shim located on one-half of one side of the V-block.

  • Patent number: 4072858
Abstract: A laser beam intensity regulator is disclosed for independently regulating the relative intensities of the coaxial monochromatic beams eminating from a multi-wavelength laser. First, the monochromatic beams are spatially separated. Utilizing the shift of a dielectric mirror's pass band towards lower wavelengths as the angle of incident beam thereon increases, the regulator described herein includes a rotatable dielectric mirror placed in the path of the monochromatic beam to be regulated. The wavelength of the beam lies on the edge of the mirror's pass band so that the amount of light transmitted through the mirror changes as a function of the angle of incidence. The mirror is controllably rotated in response to the difference between the actual and desired beam intensities to maintain the beam at the desired intensity.

  • Patent number: 4019806
Abstract: An improved optical fiber coupler for use with eccentrically mounted optical fibers is disclosed in which a V-groove coupler block is utilized for receiving and locating the mating pair of connectors. The connectors are circularly cylindrical and each lies in an end of a V-groove recess. The V-groove at one end of the coupler block is offset relative to the V-groove at the other end by the incorporation of a thin shim on one of the faces of the V-groove. The thickness of the shim determines the amount of offset.

  • Patent number: 3986233
Abstract: A buckle adjustable for belts of different widths includes a flat rectangular housing open at its top and bottom and a pair of guide members including outer channel shaped tracks and vertical front plates extending through and slidably engaging the housing openings and retained in preselected positions by bowed leaf springs entrapped between the housing front wall and respective slide plates. Belt anchoring vertical tongues project inwardly from the outer trailing ends of the guide members and are rearwardly offset from the tracks and a curved belt eyelet engaging tongue is mounted on the housing rear wall.

  • Patent number: 3932761
Abstract: A fiber coupled light emitting diode module is provided which may be utilized for plug-in incorporation into a fiber optical communications system and for easy connection to a driving voltage source. Means are included in the module for facilitating manufacture since the location of the light emitting diode is not critical within the device and the device may be operated efficiently since the heat which is generated at the light emitting diode is conducted away to the exterior of the module for dissipation.
