A method in accordance with an embodiment includes receiving, from one or more content scripts that are embedded on a webpage displayed on a browser, an indication of a media element present on the webpage, receiving from an API on the webpage, a value indicating whether the webpage is visible on the browser, and controlling playback of the media element based on the value.
