Patent number: 5257792Abstract: A metal well head seal for sealing between inner and outer concentric well head components which includes a circular metal seal having a flat end and a tapered end and positioned between the inner and outer components. A forcing cone on one of the components engages the tapered end for sealing, a backup shoulder engages the flat end as the inner and outer components are longitudinally moved together for setting the metal seal. An adjusting nut adjusts the tolerances between the tapered end and the forcing cone.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 1992Date of Patent: November 2, 1993Assignee: Fip IncorporatedInventors: Samuel W. Putch, Jack K. Sarver, John W. Pierce

Patent number: 4989902Abstract: A ratcheting and threaded connector for connecting an upper and lower tubular member which allows an upper member to be connected to a lower member with a ratcheting action and on subsequent rotation causes a threaded spring to move into position to engage shoulders on both the upper and lower members to place them in a rigid and tight relationship. Multiple load bearing shoulders on each of the members coact with load bearing shoulders on the spring to provide a substantially equal balance load distribution and allows the connector spring to have a minimum thickness.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1988Date of Patent: February 5, 1991Assignee: Norman A. Patent number: 4958686Abstract: A subsea well completion system having an improved tubing hanger that includes passageways through the hanger to one or more of the tubing annulus, the casing annulus and seals. The passageways may include vertically extending seal bores which are normally closed by check valves which may be operated to the open position. A tree adapter is connected to the tubing hanger and includes passageways coacting with the hanger passageways and includes externally connected side ports. The check valves may be selectively and remotely controlled externally of the completion system for monitoring the various annulus. The system may be abandoned by pumping cement through the passageways to seal them off and thereafter severing the completion system without the aid of a drilling rig.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 1989Date of Patent: September 25, 1990Assignee: Norman A. Patent number: 4773477Abstract: An assembly for connecting an inner and an outer tubular member to and from each other in a well. A resiliently expandable and contractible locking support element is carried by and is axially slidable on the inner member. Two or more radially outwardly extending and downwardly facing load bearing support shoulders and peripheral locking surfaces are positioned on the inner member and coact with inwardly facing load bearing shoulders and locking surfaces on the locking support element. Two or more radially outwardly facing load bearing support shoulders on the locking support element coact with mating load bearing support shoulders on the inside of the outer tubular member. A release initially prevents axial movement of the locking support element on the inner member and may be positioned above, below or intermediate the ends of the locking support element. The locking support element may be an integral unit or a plurality of multiple separate units.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1987Date of Patent: September 27, 1988Assignee: Norman A. NelsonInventor: Samuel W. Putch

Patent number: 4232889Abstract: A well pipe hanger assembly for suspending an inner pipe from an outer pipe. A hanger body with an annular recess in its outer peripheral surface in which a resiliently expandable and contractible locking ring is positioned in the recess between two stop shoulders for engagement with a matching profile on the inner peripheral surface of the outer pipe. The locking ring includes first and second telescoping portions with a re-engageable releasing means betweeen the first and second portions, initially holding the portions together but allowing longitudinal disengagement and re-engagement of the telescoping portions. Preferably, the re-engagable releasing means includes beveled cam surfaces on each portion thereby providing a recockable expanding hanger which automatically allows recocking of the locking means upon upward movement of the hanger body.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 1978Date of Patent: November 11, 1980Assignee: Norman A. Patent number: 3972546Abstract: A locking assembly for use in a well for locking a first member to a second tubular well member which includes a locking notch. The assembly includes a locking dog carried by the first member and a locking sleeve positioned for longitudinal movement towards and away from the back side of the locking dog for locking and releasing the dog from the notch. The first member and sleeve are telescopically positioned relative to each other for longitudinal movement with a limited longitudinal lost motion between the first member and sleeve allowing longitudinal movement therebetween for setting and releasing the lock, but preventing disengagement between the first member and the sleeve so that the first member may be retrieved by retrieving the sleeve.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1975Date of Patent: August 3, 1976Assignee: Norman A.
