  • Publication number: 20130198817
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for facilitating access to public wireless access points in a fixed-mobile convergence system. A mobile terminal is pre-provisioned with one or more security parameters corresponding to one or more WLAN access points that the mobile terminal might need to access should a current WLAN access point fail or otherwise become unreachable. The WLAN access points are similarly pre-provisioned with a security parameter corresponding to the mobile terminal. With these pro-provisioned security parameters, the mobile terminal and any one of the potential target WLAN access points conduct an abbreviated authentication process in the event that a switch-over becomes necessary.

  • Publication number: 20120215931
Abstract: Message routing between a mobile communication network and wireless devices is enabled by establishing a communication session between a mobile router and the mobile communication network which includes the mobile router being assigned an IP address. A wireless device is authenticated to the mobile communication network through the mobile router so that the wireless device is uniquely identifiable to the mobile communication network. A new packet data network (PDN) connection is established between the wireless device and the mobile communication network over the communication session established with the mobile communication network based on an IP address uniquely assigned to the wireless device by the mobile communication network.

  • Publication number: 20120099601
Abstract: A network element can include a proxy element that is configured to receive a request from a source node to establish a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connection from a first network address of the source node through a Packet Data Network Gateway (PDN GW) to a destination node for an IP flow. The proxy element applies an IP flow offloading policy function to determine that the requested TCP connection for the IP flow should bypass the PDN GW. The proxy element responds to the determination by communicating to the destination node a request for TCP connection with a second network address substituted for the first network address of the source node to establish the TCP connection for the IP flow from the source node to the destination node through a broadband network without passing through the PDN GW.

  • Publication number: 20110256856
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for closing all network connections to a detached user equipment. The local mobility anchor (LMA) receives and reads a control message saying that the user equipment is detached and all the network connections must be closed. The LMA performs the instructions in the control message, i.e. closes all the network connections to the user equipment. After the instructions have been executed, the LMA sends an acknowledgement back to indicate which actions have been performed. Thus, the closing of all network connections is done using only one message exchange and thereby saving signalling in the Core Network.

  • Publication number: 20060046693
Abstract: A method, Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) client, and WLAN Service Node (WSN) that allows an Extensible Authentication Protocol—Subscriber Information module (EAP-SIM) module of the WLAN client, which module may be wither downloaded from the Internet or pre-installed in the WLAN client, to extract user credentials from a Subscriber Information Module (SIM) card, and to package the credentials into the EAP-SIM format and further into the TCP/IP format, before sending them to the WSN via a serving Access Point (AP). The WSN receives the credentials and unpacks them from the TCP/IP format and further from the EAP-SIM format, and authenticates/authorizes the WLAN client. WLAN access is authorized for the WLAN client upon successful authorization.

  • Patent number: 6999449
Abstract: A system and method for monitoring and reporting a volume of data transferred between a Mobile Station (MS) and a data network during a data session. A Prepaid Server (PPS) maintains an MS account and informs a AAA Server of a predetermined volume of data that may be transferred during the session. A Packet Data Service Node (PDSN) sends interim accounting messages to the AAA Server which determines when the predetermined volume of data has been transferred, and notifies the PPS. When the account balance goes below a threshold volume, the data session is terminated. During handoff of the MS from a first PDSN to a second PDSN, a data tunnel is established between them. When the handoff is complete, the tunnel is torn down. The first PDSN reports the volume of data transferred through the tunnel to the second PDSN which reports the volume to the AAA Server.

  • Publication number: 20040258028
Abstract: A method and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) Access Point Controller (APC) for translating signalling and traffic Point-to-Point Protocol PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) data frames into PPP over Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) data frames, and vice-versa. When a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is implemented into a CDMA2000 network, a WLAN client sends PPPoE data frames to a WLAN Access Point Controller (APC) that connects to a CDMA2000 Packet Data Service Node (PDSN). The WLAN APC receives the downlink PPPoE data frames and converts them in PPP over GRE data format understood by the CDMA2000 PDSN, and relays the translated frames to the PDSN. In the uplink, the WLAN APC receives PPP over GRE data frames from the PDSN, frames that are intended for the WLAN client, and translates them into PPPoE data frames, which are relayed to the WLAN client.

  • Publication number: 20030212794
Abstract: A method and a node for associating an IP address of a device with its MAC address, where the network parts of the device and the node are different. The device receives an ARP response comprising the device's IP address and MAC address, accepts the response regardless of a difference between the network parts, and associates the IP address with the MAC address. There is further a method and a node in an IP network where the node receives a message for the device, determines that it does not have the MAC address corresponding to the IP address, and broadcasts an ARP request. The method and node is particularly useful for mobile IP, where a device roams between various sub-nets.

  • Patent number: 6360076
Abstract: A method in a radio telecommunications network of broadcasting data in an over-the-air multicast to a group of mobile terminals. Statistics from regular point-to-point cellular transmissions to build a statistical database for each base station. The statistical data indicate the optimal signal quality that users normally experience when operating in that cell. From this data, a minimum transmission quality (TQmin) that a mobile terminal must receive for the type of data being broadcast is determined. The method then broadcasts a test transmission to the mobile terminals, and includes a maximum transmission quality (TQmax) in order to limit the number of responses. A response is then received from a mobile terminal representative of the group, the response including an indication of the received transmission quality. The method then determines whether the received transmission quality was greater than or equal to TQmin.
